CORRECTED POST

When I first posted this blog, I omitted the link to the rest of the article. I also chose a fairly graphic image, which I have replaced with one that I hope pushes fewer buttons.

Teaching in the -Too Era

As anyone who’s read Romeo and Juliet can imagine, being an English teacher sometimes includes talking about s*x with large groups of other people’s children. It’s often awkward and accompanied by much giggling, but there’s one aspect of human s*xuality--rape--that is often presented as simultaneously catastrophic and unmentionable, especially in older books....https://www.elizabethbreau.net/post/teaching-in-the-metoo-era

As anyone who’s read Romeo and Juliet can imagine, being an English teacher sometimes includes talking about s*x with large groups of other people’s children. It’s often awkward and accompanied by much giggling, but there’s one aspect of human s*xuality--rape--that is often presented as simultaneously catastrophic and unmentionable, especially in older books. As a result, teachers can easily shy away from discussing s*xual assault even when it’s an important part of a book’s plot.

Sink or Swim: Raising Standards Fast
SAt the end of January, I accepted a part-time job teaching two English classes at a small private religious school in addition to my full-time work as a private tutor. One class, a mixture of seventh- and eighth-graders, had just begun reading Lois Lowry’s The Giver, a Newberry Award winning book that’s been a standard of middle school English classes since the 1990s, when I taught it at another religious school. Then, the students responded enthusiastically to the novel’s critique of “sameness.” They connected it to A Wrinkle in Time, which many had read on their own, and class discussion needed only a little guidance from me. It was, in teaching terms, an unqualified success...https://www.elizabethbreau.net/post/sink-or-swim-raising-standards-fast

Easy Peasy: Parsing the English Modules on the Digital SAT

One of my ninth grade students recently tried the first English module on the new digital SAT for the first time. It took him almost twice as long as the 32 minutes the test allows, but he only got one question--about comma placement--wrong. He’ll have to speed up, of course, when he takes the test for real in eleventh grade, but he basically already knows everything he needs to know…https://www.elizabethbreau.net/post/easy-peasy-parsing-the-english-modules-on-the-digital-sat

Getting Kids to Write Ideas, Not Just Words

When I tell people that I’m an English teacher, they often confess that they were bad at spelling or punctuation. I never quite know what to say because that isn’t really what I teach. Those things are important, of course, but they matter less than whether the writer is saying anything worth reading…https://www.elizabethbreau.net/post/getting-kids-to-write-ideas-not-just-words

Experts have been imploring parents to reduce their children’s screen time since the 1970s, when a limited number of children’s programs were available for a few hours a day. Concerns grew with each new screen technology--video games, cell phones, and social media--and a number of studies have n...

Word Soup: Why We Need Grammar

The American educational system has often had a conflicted relationship with English grammar, possibly arising from the conflict between education for the elite, who learned Latin and Greek in school, and education for the masses, which was often limited to basic literacy and numeracy. Studies have suggested that studying grammar does not make people better writers, and many English teachers have been content to leave grammar instruction to high school foreign language teachers who teach the grammar rules of whatever language they teach...https://www.elizabethbreau.net
