Time for another Book of the Week! This week’s recommendation is for sixth through eighth grade scholars — “The Forgotten Summer of Seneca” by Camryn Garrett.

This week’s adventure follows Rowan, a 12-year-old budding photographer, who is not looking forward to summer with her aunt in New York City, until she steps through a portal that takes her into the city’s past, launching an adventure full of friendships and discoveries that she’ll never forget.

Major news! Our district took another BIG step on our journey to financial sustainability this week.

On Wednesday, our Board of Education voted to use surplus funds to help retire the outstanding debt associated with a series of School Building and Site Bonds originally issued in 2005.

This means two things:
1.) We are eliminating this bond debt in 2027 — three years ahead of schedule!
2.) We will be working with the Highland Park city assessor’s office to lower the property tax levied to pay down the debt by more than 40% in the coming year.

This is great news for Highland Park children, families and taxpayers. By continuing to lower our debt obligations, we strengthen the district's position while providing tax relief to residents as we work to further our Children First mission.

The HPSD Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting for Today, Wednesday, September 16 for the purposes of the Board considering the approval of the bond redemption.
The meeting will begin at 6:30p.m. at Barber Preparatory Academy, 45 E. Buena Vista St. Highland Park, MI 48203.

There’s a friendly new face in a big post at Barber Preparatory Academy! Please join us in giving a warm Highland Park welcome to Principal Sabina Turner!

Mrs. Turner is an enthusiastic educator with a lifelong passion for learning. She brings 25 years of diverse experience to BPA. She holds multiple advanced degrees and certifications in education and administration and has been recognised for her contributions to educational excellence and character development.

Her approach is grounded in inclusive education, strong institutional practices, social- emotional learning and creating school communities where every student has the opportunity to thrive.

We are excited to welcome her to the Highland Park family and look forward to supporting her as she leads the school through another year of learning and growing.

As we settle back into the school year, a few simple habits can help scholars stay focused and set themselves up for success:

- Set up a homework space where your scholar can focus.
- Break down larger assignments into smaller goals.
- Limit distractions by putting phones and TV away to limit distractions.
- Celebrate your scholar’s progress and achievements.
- Prioritize sleep to ensure your scholar feels ready and prepared to learn.

Small habits can make a huge difference. We’re excited to learn and grow together!
