For students who are starting to think about their college essay topics, it can be helpful to consider which topics to avoid. Here are five topics to avoid from Rachel DeJong, ATC Co-President and college essay coach.

🔗 If you’re looking for more help getting started, register for our College Essay Writing Workshop on May 21. Link in bio for more details!

1. The Essay Itself - We get this one a lot! Resist the temptation to write about potential topics or staring at the blank page. Colleges want to know who you are – not your writing process.

2. A Service Trip - Service essays tend to follow the same tropes and patterns, so while meaningful and significant, these trips will not help you stand out – and that’s kind of the point!

3. Your Grades - Grades or anything academic related will show up in other parts of your application. Use the essay to showcase your identity beyond your transcript.

4. Young Childhood - Colleges want to know who you are right now; it’s ok to reference childhood memories, but do not center the essay on something that happened way back when.

5. Outside Influence - Limit the influence from external sources e.g. social media, TikTok. Your essay should be rooted in your own experience, what you care about and not what others have done successfully, (tempting as it might be).
