This Spring, in collaboration with the NKU Chapter of Women in CyberSecurity - WiCyS, our team comprised of Sarah Ogden, Katherine Groemling, Sydney Boomer, & Carson Rolph competed in the The National Cyber League 's Spring 2024 CTF placing 136ᵗʰ out of 386 teams in the Experienced Students Bracket. The team did especially well in the categories of Network Traffic Analysis, Log Analysis, and Cryptography, even placing 90ᵗʰ in the Network Traffic Analysis category.

This Spring, NKCyber's team comprised of Sujal Parajuli, Zachary Smith, Rohan Karki, Patrick Hirsch, & Angel Munoz competed in the The National Cyber League's Spring 2024 game finishing in the top 3% (119/4199). The team did exceptionally well in the categories of Network Traffic Analysis, Enumeration & Exploitation, and Forensics having finished among the top 100 teams in each category.

On the cutting edge of , at last Friday's meeting of our CST Division, NKCyber members explored, dissected, and exploited the (CVE-2024-3094) just a week after its discovery.

With a dockerized instance of the vulnerability prepared by Davide Guerri we managed to leverage Anthony Weems's xzbot to demo the exploit in action in a controlled environment. This allowed us to explore the intricacies of the exploit and analyze its entry into the supply chain.

The supply chain attack managed to sneak an SSH backdoor into the recent release of XZ Utils, a compression software that comes packaged with most Linux distributions. If left undetected, this exploit would have granted the unidentified attacker remote access at the root level to virtually every system on the internet.

NKCyber's CyberSword CTF saw its third run last Wednesday at the Championship for over 450 elementary schoolers in attendance.

Zack Sargent and Angel Munoz traveled down to Lexington to host CyberSword once again. Designed to be adaptable, the CTF was scaled back this time for a younger audience, introducing fundamental concepts of Python, HTML, and Linux to help students earn their ribbon as a "Computational Thinker".

The web platform seamlessly ran on our servers at NKU for the event over 67 miles away in Rupp Arena, thanks to the work of our Build Team, led by Robert Gehrum. They have spent the past year rebuilding and improving our server infrastructure to host competitions such as and CyberShield along with our website, wiki, and more.

And, special thanks to Sarah Mann, and the College of Informatics, Northern Kentucky University for supporting this event!

Last Weekend NKCyber hosted the Second Annual CyberShield right here in Griffin Hall's Digitorium.

3 Teams from Campbell County High School, Covington Catholic High School , & St. Henry District High School competed searching for flags in an Ubuntu Linux environment through a series challenges designed to introduce the BASH shell, and some tools for analyzing and understanding programs.

Congrats to our first place team from Campbell County High School and everyone else who competed! We hope you all had fun and got a chance to learn something new.

Last month NKCyber's Zack Sargent, Ben Molloy, and Patrick Hirsch hosted the second run of CyberSword at INTERalliance's 2024: Empower. 16 new talented students from local high schools worked through the material. One student added: "I genuinely like that you included a mini tutorial within the ctf. People that already have experience can still have fun do the ctf, and those who don't are able to learn more and have fun at the same time."

It's always inspiring to see the intense passion for technology in Cincinnati. Thank you to the INTERalliance of Greater Cincinnati for organizing such a great event and to Professor Ankur Chatterjee for helping to get NKCyber involved!

At the start of February, NKCyber debued CyberSword at the Kentucky TSA Regional Competition hosted by College of Informatics, Northern Kentucky University.

A total of 18 students from local high schools were challenged to learn cybersecurity concepts such as Web Exploitation, Python Scripting, and SQL Injections. Student reviews include, "It was fun" and "I learned quite a bit more about SQL. Since I had no experience with it at all. And it took me step by step, with help from the instructor".

After the conference, we got the opportunity to show off some of our hardware and systems to a group from Campbell County Highschool.

Closing off an eventful February for NKCyber, last weekend our team of Patrick Hirsch, Ben Molloy, Robert Gehrum, Sarah Ogden, Sydney Boomer, Angel Munoz, Carson Rolph, & Dexter Walters competed in the CCDC Midwest Regionals Wildcard competition, placing 7th out of 15 teams competing!

While we won't be advancing further in CCDC this year, we had fun, learned quite a lot, and made significant personal improvements this go!

Last weekend NKCyber placed 2nd in State in the CCDC Midwest Regionals.
The team comprised of Sydney Boomer, Dexter Walters, Ben Molloy, Angel Munoz, Robert Gehrum, Sujal Parajuli, Patrick Hirsch, & Carson Rolph put its cyberdefence skills to the test competing alongside 17 other teams in the region.

NKCyber will be returning to compete in the CCDC Midwest Regionals Wildcard competition next week.
