The Traveling Gizmo Show Hands-on aerospace and basic STEM education presented by a veteran space writer/geek. No charge, except for materials used, for groups in Otero County.

When I considered the hassle of doing field trips to a museum, I decided to make my business mobile: I bring demos and activities to your school or youth group. I bring hands-on, interdisciplinary STEM activities that touch many concepts, incorporate math and language skills, and support NGSS. Classes are held at youth and community facilities or at schools (homes for homeschoolers). Dave Dooling is a semi-retired aerospace & STEM educator. 25 years in Huntsville, AL, as a science writer; 9 years at Sunspot as education officer; 11 years as education director at the New Mexico Museum of Space History. The work is too much fun to give up.

How big is the Moon compared to Earth? Why is Pluto a “dwarf” planet? But first: What is a planet? Start with a 12-inch classroom globe and show how big (or small) you think the Moon is. And then Mars, which has as much land as Earth despite being smaller (a trick question), and follow up with Mercury, and Pluto. Switch scales to a 2-inch Earth so you can use beach balls for the giant planets. Finally (play) money shows orders of magnitude so you can cross the universe to the edge of creation.
