The cost for the Beginning Band is $175 per semester (payable in five easy installments of $35 each, if necessary). Students are responsible for providing their own instruments, and the Beginning Band students must purchase an inexpensive band method book entitled Best in Class. The instruments included in the concert band are traditional band instruments such as clarinet, flute, alto sax, trumpet
, cornet, french horn, trombone, percussion, and bells. The Advanced Band consists of students who have played on a standard band instrument (woodwind, brass, or percussion) for at least a
year. The Advanced Band meets on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15 to 4:45. The cost for the Advanced Band is $175 payable in five easy installments of $35 each, if necessary) per semester. The bands rehearse in the chapel on the campus of Hayworth Christian School, located at 1696 Westchester Drive (Highway 68 South) in High Point, across from Providence Place. For both bands, a Winter Concert is held in December. In January, a second semester mid will begin with separate charges identical to the Fall Semester, and a final Spring Concert will be presented, usually in May at the end of that semester. Concert dates are arranged with cooperation from the parents to ensure the widest participation in the performances by the most number of students. The Winter Concert typically features a broad spectrum of holiday selections, while the Spring Concert will present popular music from numerous genres, including film, Broadway, jazz, and contemporary artists. The director is available for private lessons during the summer. The Hayworth Christian-High Point Home Schooler Band program started in 1993 as an experiment. Since then, approximately 400 students from all over the Triad have experienced the pleasure of making music with a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument in the band. The HC-HPHS band has been featured twice in the High Point Enterprise and has been the focus of a study conducted by the President of
the North Carolina Home Educators Association. Several of its students have achieved personal success performing with the Central District Bandmasters Association Honor Band and the NC All-State Honor Band, as well as, earning superior ratings at CDBA Solo & Ensemble Festivals. Under the direction of Dennis Renfroe, who completed his doctorate in music education at UNCG, the band program consists of two ensembles: a beginning band for students with little or no background in music and an advanced band for students with a minimum of one-year prior experience playing a band instrument (an audition is required for entrance into the advanced band).
