Internship Spotlight – Spring 2020
Taylor Parks
Major: Human Relations
Minor: Pre-Law Track
Organization/Business Name: Sams Law Firm, 1208 Eastchester Dr., Suite 101, High Point, NC 27265
Site Supervisor Name and Title: Melissa Sams, Owner and Attorney at Law and Grace Lay, Associate Attorney
Student Internship Title: Receptionists, HR Intern, and Billing Coordinator
How did you use your knowledge from classroom work to apply during your experiential experience?
My supervisors were incredibly busy and didn’t have the time to walk me through every single step or direction. I was able to use the skills I learned in class such as problem solving and independent thinking in order to accomplish tasks without having to ask questions every second.
Important piece of information would you share with other Human Relations, Nonprofit and Leadership Majors that come after you?
Be prepared to actually do work in your internship. Your supervisor is not going to take it easy on you or allow you to sit around and easily give you the hours you need. My supervisor made me earn my hours, but I was able to learn a lot about the profession.
What was highlight of your internship experience?
My supervisor, Melissa Sams, took me to the High Point Bar Association Luncheon where I was able to socialize and network with multiple attorneys and judges within the High Point community. I also enjoyed how much independence my supervisor gave me. I was able to facilitate a lot of meetings and draft paperwork.
What is the next step for you?
I will be attending Law School in the Fall (undecided), and I plan to work for the Prince Georges County Court System over the Summer.

How did you use your knowledge from classroom work to apply during your experiential experience?
Marketing was new for me, but I gained so much knowledge during my internship. Everything I learned in my HRE classes helped prepare me to succeed at my internship.
Important piece of information would you share with other Human Relations, Nonprofit and Leadership Majors that come after you?
Enjoy this experience. It not only prepares you for the next steps after college, but it can possibly
be your next job. It can have an impact on you the way my internship has for me. The
experience is for you, and you will greatly benefit from it.
What was highlight of your internship experience?
The highlight of my experience was being able to learn from many heart survivors and
hear their stories. They made a huge impact on me. Life is short and you should fight for your life and make sure you stay healthy. I also enjoyed gaining marketing experience and learning how to be innovative and creative with projects.
What is the next step for you?
The next step for me is to continue my education with grad school here at High Point University. I am working on my MBA in business, and then, hopefully, I will find a marketing job that will be a great fit for me.

Chloe Hasden
Major: Nonprofit Leadership & Management
Minor: Human Relations and Event Management
Organization/Business Name: Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont, 1222 Eastchester Drive, Suite 100,
High Point, 27265
Student Internship Title: Special Events Intern
Site Supervisor Name: Shirley Simauchi
How did you use your knowledge from classroom work to apply during your experiential experience?
I am a major in NPL and have a double minor in Human Relations and Nonprofit, so I see coursework in action every time I work! I have used my knowledge of making asks and soliciting donations, I have helped in the set-up and registration of a fundraising event making $80,000, and I am able to better understand the dynamics of a workplace.
What is an important piece of information would you share with other Human Relations, Nonprofit and Leadership majors that come after you?
When in your internship, don’t be afraid to offer input. As college students, we often have ideas and knowledge that is new for others, and they love to hear our ideas!
What was highlight of your internship experience?
The highlight of my experience at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Piedmont was having the opportunity to work their annual gala banquet event in January! I got to make some of the signage and material for utilization during the event, help register attendees, assist with the silent auction, and help with reports and follow-up. The event made over $70,000 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters that supports the elementary students of High Point and Greensboro!
What is the next step for you?
I am still working remotely as we finish the spring semester online. I am starting up a virtual giving campaign because two annual fundraising events have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I am also creating a free website for all of the “Littles” to use that will have access and ideas for mindfulness, fun, and de-stressing activities during this time of uncertainty and transition when they are not in their classrooms.

Her University service includes Employee Wellness, Student Life, and Civic Engagement and Service-Learning Committees as well as mentoring junior faculty. The Class of 2021 recently awarded Dr. Cugliari with the 2019-2020 Faculty Excellence Award. Cece, we wish you many adventures as you begin your well-deserved retirement.
