With a full-time faculty of ten members, the department teaches more than fifty different courses.

We offer two majors: History and History with Teaching Certification in Social Studies. The department sponsors minors in History, International Relations, Latin American Studies, and/or North American Studies. Since January 2007, the department has offered the Masters of Arts degree in history.

Today students in Dr. Allen’s Pre-Modern Sports and Games class got a special behind-the-scenes tour of the Qubein Arena. Led by Daniel Distasio, Assistant Director of Athletic Facilities and Operations, students saw the various spaces that make the Qubein Arena extraordinary while learning about all it takes to run and maintain the space and events! This comes while students have been learning about how the Ancient Romans expanded sports and events from aspects of religious festivals to large-scale forms of entertainment. To meet the growing needs of popular sports, the Romans built the stadiums and arenas that inspire ones today. They also revolutionized sport management and audience experience laying important foundations for the same industries today. What a great experiential learning opportunity right here on campus linking ancient history to a major aspect of our modern lives!

As we start the new year we are thrilled to recognize Dr. Schneid and Dr. Allen who won two of five faculty awards for 2026!

Dr. Schneid won the Meredith Clark Slane Distinguished Teaching and Service Award recognizing his deep commitment to teaching and mentoring our students not only while at HPU, but also, beyond graduation!

Dr. Allen won the Innovation and Creativity in Teaching Award recognizing her unique assignments and pedagogy to bring history to life and spark inspiration!

We are proud of all of our professors and students and know we will have another wonderful year!

It’s always sad when it’s the final week of study abroad…but it was still a fun and full week for the Tudor History in London class! They explored and toured a replica of Francis Drake’s Golden Hinde ship on which he circumnavigated the globe; took a walk in Shakespeare’s steps along the Thames; had a final exam review session at Coal Drop’s Yard; and said farewell with delicious Indian food! And all while experiencing a record-breaking UK heatwave!

What a wonderful experiential learning opportunity and a great group of students!

It was a busy end of week 3 for the Tudor History in London class! They walked through 1000 years of history at both The Tower of London and Oxford University! So much to see and learn!

Today HPU students had a once-in-a-lifetime study abroad experience! Dr. Allen’s Tudor History in London class visited the special limited exhibit “Elizabeth I: Queen and Court” at the Philip Mould & Company Gallery. They were even lucky enough to meet Ellie Smith, Associate Director at Philip Mould, who provided insights on the exhibition and key paintings. The majority of the paintings on display are held in private collections and rarely in public view. The exhibit underscores what students have been learning about the power of image for Tudor monarchs and sets up their last week focusing on Elizabeth’s reign. What an incredible experiential learning opportunity! Thank you for welcoming us and curating a fantastic exhibit!
