🧠👂 Same Ears. Different Processing.

Did you know that a student can hear perfectly well but still struggle to understand and process what they hear?

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) affects how the brain interprets sounds and spoken information. Students with APD may have difficulty following directions, understanding conversations in noisy environments, or remembering verbal instructions.

💡 The good news? Small accommodations can make a BIG difference!

By providing visual supports, breaking instructions into smaller steps, reducing background noise, and allowing extra processing time, educators and families can help students with APD feel more confident and successful.

At The Piedmont School & John Yowell Academy, we recognize that every student learns differently. Understanding those differences is an important step toward creating a learning environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive!

🎭 Teamwork took center stage in Drama class! 🌟

Students put their creativity and communication skills to the test with a fun Drama game called “Object.” Working together against the clock, each group had to use every team member to create different objects with their bodies. From a clock and a bike to a water bottle and even a vending machine, their creativity was definitely on display!

But the best part came afterward. During reflection, students shared some pretty thoughtful takeaways about cooperation, kindness, and communication. They recognized that speaking kindly can help others accomplish more and that helping a teammate find a way to contribute makes the entire group stronger. 💜

A little silliness, a lot of creativity, and some pretty meaningful lessons along the way, that’s a great day in Drama! 👏🎬

🐾There’s nothing quite like a visit from our furry friends! 🐾

Our Panthers were all smiles during a special visit from Pet Partners therapy dogs! From classroom cuddles to plenty of pets and tail wags, these sweet visitors brought a little extra joy, comfort, and calm to the school day. 🐶

We are so grateful to Pet Partners and their wonderful handlers for sharing their time and their four-legged friends with our students. It’s amazing what a little puppy love can do! 🐾❤️

Dyslexia is more than reversing letters, it’s a brain-based learning difference that can affect reading, spelling, and processing written language. It does not reflect a student’s intelligence, potential, or willingness to learn.

With structured instruction, multisensory learning, appropriate accommodations, and plenty of encouragement, students with dyslexia can build confidence and thrive. 🌟

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month!

We are honored to share that High Point Mayor Cyril Jefferson presented a proclamation recognizing October as Learning Disabilities Awareness Month in the City of High Point, in conjunction with The Piedmont School & John Yowell Academy!

This recognition is especially meaningful to our school community as we celebrate the unique strengths, talents, and potential of students who learn differently. Every day, we are proud to advocate for greater awareness, understanding, and acceptance of learning differences while empowering our Panthers to recognize that the way they learn is part of what makes them extraordinary. 🐾

A heartfelt thank you to Mayor Jefferson and the City Council of High Point for helping us shine a light on learning differences and the importance of ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.

When we better understand how students with ADHD learn, we can provide the structure, encouragement, movement, clear expectations, and positive relationships they need to thrive.

At TPS & JYA, we know that learning differently doesn’t mean learning less. Every student brings unique strengths, talents, perspectives, and ways of thinking to the classroom.

This month, we’re raising awareness, celebrating neurodiversity, and helping others better understand the many types of learning disabilities. With the right support, strategies, and encouragement, students with learning differences can thrive.
