David R. Hayworth School of Arts and Design (SOAD) at High Point University

Sponsored by the Department of Theater and Dance and the Creative Arts Fellows, we welcome all to come and experience the empowering work the arts can accomplish. On Thursday, October 15 at 3:30 pm, we will host a special screening of the documentary film We Lift Each Other, which features members of the Raleigh-based contemporary dance company Black Box Dance Theatre

The screening will take place in the Pauline Theater and is free for all participants. This short film follows the company as it works with military veterans, exploring the ways movement and creative expression can foster healing. Through interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, the film highlights the transformative role of the arts in connecting individuals with diverse life experiences.

Following the screening, audience members will have the opportunity to engage with members of Black Box Dance Theatre in a discussion about the film and the company’s community-based artistic practice.

Hi, Art and Graphic Design students!

Are you in or around High Point next Thursday or Friday (June 11 and 12)? Do you want to make a cameo in the School of Arts and Design’s new studio safety videos?

We’re looking for a few student volunteers to help demonstrate everyday studio activities in our art, design, photography, and fabrication spaces. No acting required; just show up and do what you normally do!

If you’re interested, please reach out to me ([email protected]) so I can share the project’s schedule.

Help make future students safer (and maybe achieve minor SoAD celebrity status in the process...)!

We loved seeing our design students excel in Japan as they wrapped up their “Auspicious Environments” class! 🇯🇵

The course is an exploration of the real and virtual worlds of Japanese fashion and design, in contrast to American style. Students learn lifelong skills as they collaborate in interdisciplinary teams to examine the nexus between the two disciplines. This course includes a culminating creative team expression in the third discipline of Visual Merchandising Design (VMD). Students investigated the key Japanese design influences in apparel, architecture, interiors and products, and drew comparisons between eastern and western approaches and aesthetics whilst building a bridge between simulated and physical realms.

From the medieval heart of Siena to the global stage of the Venice Biennale, HPU students spent the first few weeks of May exploring Italy through sketching, art history, and immersive cultural experiences as part of ‘The Grand Tour of Italy’ global experience program. Florence, Venice, and Rome offered unforgettable encounters with iconic masterpieces, contemporary art, and the historical spaces that continue to shape creative practice today.
