Learn about fascinating fungi such as the Crown-tipped coral (Artomyces pyxidatus). It is a type of coral fungus that grows on decaying wood, characterized by its coral-like structure and distinctive crown-shaped formations at the tips of its branches. Found in eastern North America and other regions, this edible fungus is a popular foraged food, known for its fibrous texture. While generally safe, proper identification is crucial, as there are other fungi with similar appearances. Join us this weekend and learn in a group while taking home some wild edibles. https://chattanoogaaudubon.app.neoncrm.com/nx/portal/neonevents/events?path=%2Fportal%2Fevents%2F16390&fbclid=IwVERDUAMoRWZleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHi1M1EvaKZoxkZKSWCqGpqQsx53gl4CpJCaV9xypMBs0DTwSJ7vLrTNujsX5_aem_6d8z2wqTwEIUpTafJ9d3-w

It is characterized by a white, silky, and dry cap, free pink gills, and a sac-like volva at the base of the stem. While edible when cooked, it can be confused with poisonous Amanita species, so proper identification is crucial before num num. Paw paw (our largest native fruit) is becoming ripe. One of my favorites, tasting like a banana and mango. So you can start looking for this tree mainly around eastern regions of the United States, particularly in areas with moist, fertile, soil. Not everyone's stomach tolerates them though.

Autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) is a deciduous shrub native to Asia that has become invasive in the United States. It has silvery-green leaves and red berries(with tiny silver freckles on them) that are starting to become ripe in August. It's almost like eating a sour tart candy in berry form and because they are pretty tasty, the critters love them.

Disclaimer: do your own research before consuming any wild edibles/teas. Sassafras trees (root beer) are common here in the southeast. Easy to recognize from its dinosaur footprint like leaves mixed with glove mitten leaves. If you think that you might have a lookalike tree/shrub just tear up a leaf and smell for root beer sweetness. You don't need much root to make a delicious drink also called sassafras tea. All you have to do is grind it up~put it in a defuser~add steeping hot water~add honey or a sweetener and enjoy!
