Which is older: this 1887 hymn or the bluegrass tradition The Hillbilly Thomists have used to give this song its arrangement? Scholars can debate that but what can’t be debated is this is not the way those who grew up in church sang it on Sunday mornings. What a beautiful gift that is! The Hillbilly Thomists have given us a new and old way to receive and reflect on a timeless and familiar message.
