There are several fire departments throughout Burke County, and many are always looking for new firefighters to join their ranks.

In 1736, Benjamin Franklin helped establish the first organized fire department in America. Since then, the fire service has relied heavily on volunteers. Today, 69% of firefighters in America are volunteers, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Being a firefighter takes hard work, dedication, and training — but the rewards are difficult to put into words.

Volunteers come from all walks of life. They are bankers, engineers, factory workers, preachers, business owners, truck drivers, and so much more.

You name it — they are firefighters.
