🎶 National Arts in Education Week | Educator Spotlight

Meet Glenda Stephens, K–5 General Music and Grades 3–5 Chorus Teacher at Viewmont Elementary School! Glenda has been part of the HCS family for 10 years.

We asked Glenda a few questions about music, teaching, and what makes her proud:

❤️ What do you love most about teaching the arts?

I love that I get to share my favorite subject with so many different students and see them develop a love for music.

🌎 What’s something your students would be surprised to learn about you?

I love to travel and learn about different cultures.

🌟 What is your proudest moment as an arts educator?

My proudest moment was seeing a former student that I taught in middle school chorus become a successful middle school chorus teacher.

Want a SNEAK PEEK of what’s been happening in 5th Grade English Language Arts?!? 📚

Your wait is over! Ms. Phillips’ 5th graders are doing some serious text detective work! Students have been digging into stories to identify characters, setting, and plot, while using graphic organizers to sort their ideas and make sense of what they’re reading. 🔍

But they aren’t stopping at just finding the answer! As they dive into RL.5.1, students are learning to go back into the text, find specific evidence, and quote it to support their thinking. 💭➡️📖

These 5th graders are working hard to become stronger, more thoughtful readers, and we can’t wait to see where their learning takes them! 💙🐻

Things got a little foamy in Mrs. Hatchett’s STEAM class! Students across all grade levels worked together to create elephant toothpaste while exploring the science behind chemical reactions. 🫧 🧪

There’s nothing better than learning that gets students collaborating, experimenting, asking questions…and having a whole lot of fun along the way! Who knew science could be this FOAM-tastic?! 💙🐘🫧

2nd Graders in Mr. B’s class were putting their reading skills to work today! 📚✨

Students practiced identifying word patterns to help them decode and read words in a passage. Using highlighters, they categorized words as open syllable, closed syllable, or long-vowel silent-e patterns. 🔎🖍️

The goal is for students to recognize a word pattern, know the vowel sound that goes with it, and use that knowledge to confidently read and comprehend unfamiliar words. We’re building strong, independent readers one word pattern at a time! 💙🐻

2nd graders in Mrs. Creger’s and Ms. Enciso’s classes have been putting their math skills to work with some hands-on learning! Using centimeter cubes, students explored how to measure, describe, and compare lengths while building their understanding of important measurement vocabulary. 📏 🧮

There’s nothing better than seeing math come to life as students learn by doing, exploring, and discovering! Excellent work, second grade! 💙🐻

This week in Art with Mrs. Knowles, our students celebrated International Dot Day with creativity, color, and an important reminder inspired by The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds! 🎨✨

Dot Day is about so much more than art. ❤️ It’s about helping every child understand that they matter, their ideas matter, and the mark they make on our world matters. So students created their own unique works of art while learning that sometimes all it takes is a little encouragement to discover what we’re capable of.

Every student who walks through our doors at Viewmont has something special to contribute. Our job is to help them see it, believe it, and have the confidence to say, “I can make my mark!” Today, our artists did just that, one dot at a time! 🔴🔵🟣🟠🟡🟢⚫️

🧪🔬 Our 5th Grade DLI scientists kicked off their study of observable and measurable properties of matter with a hands-on investigation…and this one was pretty tasty! 😋

Students examined and categorized different types of crackers based on their properties, carefully recording their observations along the way. They then used evidence from their investigation to answer questions and explain how different materials can have different properties.

Way to go, 5th Grade DLI! 💙🐻

Mrs. Chisholm’s 3rd grade Bears were hard at work today with hands-on, small-group learning!

➕ In Math, students explored the Commutative Property, working together to build their understanding and explain their mathematical thinking. 🔢✨

🔬 In Science, students used interactive notebooks to investigate matter, writing about and comparing the different characteristics of solids. 🧊🪨🧱

We love seeing our students collaborating, thinking, writing, and discovering together! Learning is always better when students get to DO the thinking! 💙🐻

Meet Denise Knowles, K–5 Visual Arts Teacher at Viewmont Elementary School! Denise has been part of the HCS family for an incredible 23 years!

We asked Denise a few questions about art, teaching and what makes her proud:

❤️ What do you love most about teaching the arts?

I love being able to teach all the students at my school the things I love to do! My art room is a safe place where students can explore, make mistakes, and grow from their experiences.

🤩 What’s something your students would be surprised to learn about you?

I have been a teacher for 37 years! I have taught kindergarten, 2nd, and 3rd grades in addition to art!

🎨 What is your proudest moment as an arts educator?

My proudest moment is every time I see that smile on a student’s face, feeling proud of what they’ve created! That makes me so very proud!

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we invite all students to wear red, white, and blue this Friday, September 11th. Together as a Bear Family, we will honor and remember those individuals and families whose lives were impacted on that day. 💙🐻
