Congratulations to HCAM's NC Hero, Paige Walker, Health Sciences teacher and dedicated paramedic with Catawba County EMS, for being named the Second Place Winner in the statewide Best of NC Heroes 2026 Contest! We have the greatest students, staff, faculty, and NC Heroes here at HCAM! Go Hurricanes! Go Ms. Walker!
Today, we had the honor of surprising Paige Walker alongside Hickory City Schools staff, Catawba County Emergency Services personnel, and a representative from Horton & Mendez, Attorneys at Law, PLLC, with some exciting news—she has been named the Second Place Winner in the statewide Best of NC Heroes 2026 Contest!
Paige received the second-highest number of votes among more than 800 votes cast across 30 North Carolina counties. The contest, created by Horton & Mendez Cares, recognizes everyday heroes who make a meaningful impact in their communities.
As a CTE teacher at Hickory Career and Arts Magnet High School and a dedicated paramedic with Catawba County EMS, Paige exemplifies what it means to serve others. Her commitment to educating future healthcare professionals while continuing to care for our community through EMS has inspired countless students, colleagues, patients, and community members.

ATTENTION PARENTS: Save your bare feet! Donate your LEGO/building blocks to Science!
Is your living room floor a minefield of plastic building blocks? The Drone Fundamentals class at HCAM wants to take them off your hands!
In Drone Fundamentals, students build a mock scene as part of their project. We then fly the drone around and over the mock scene, practicing safety and reinforcing rules and guidelines. Instead of buying expensive materials, we want to upcycle any unused building blocks you might be willing to donate!
What we are requesting:
LEGO, Mega Bloks, Duplo, or any brand of building bricks; loose pieces, incomplete sets
Baseplates (the flat sheets to build on—these are gold to us!)
Random figures, small toy cars, or trees to populate our scenes
Where to drop them off:
Please drop donations off in the front office or send them to school in August with your student to Room 108, Mrs. Brittain's room.
Thank you for helping us bring hands-on STEM learning to life (and clearing out your closets)!
