Bringing History to Life at HCAM

HCAM’s Holocaust class is learning beyond the textbook through powerful conversations with special guests.

Last week, Rhoda Maynard-Yoder, HCAM English instructor and her students heard from Michael Abramson, son of Gizella Abramson, about his mother’s courageous journey as a spy during the Holocaust and the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act for NC.

Today, students welcomed Rabbi Fred Gutman of Temple Emanuel in Greensboro, one of the nation’s leading Holocaust authorities, who helped students better understand Jewish faith, culture, and identity.

These meaningful conversations remind us of the power of remembering, learning, and sharing history.

BRIBE DAY HAS ARRIVED AT HCAM!

It’s one of HCAM’s most anticipated traditions! Our Student Council candidates rolled into third block with decorated campaign carts packed with sweet treats, juice, stickers, and plenty of other bribe-worthy goodies!

Candidates visited classrooms, met with prospective voters, and shared why they’re the best choice for the office they’re running for. From creative carts to creative campaigns, the competition is heating up!

Congratulations to HCAM student Emory P. for earning First Place in the Southeastern Division of the American History Video Contest, sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR)!

Emory was recognized in the spring by the John Hoyle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in this year’s American History Essay Contest, earning district and state honors in the video essay category.

This year’s theme, “Patriots of the American Revolution,” challenged students to explore our nation’s founding era through thoughtful research, writing, and creativity.

We have several important updates regarding our upcoming Open House and the start of the school year. Please read through the details below to help us launch a smooth, successful year!

🎉 OPEN HOUSE DETAILS

When: Friday, August 21

Sessions:

9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

12:00 PM – 3:00 PM

4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Format: Drop-in (no registration or sign-up needed!)

What to expect at Open House:

🗓️ Schedules: Pick up your student's class schedule.

📄 Paperwork: Drop off needed forms (birth certificates, immunizations, proof of address, etc.).

💳 School Fees: Pay the $15 instructional fee per student in person or online at hickorycam.hickoryschools.net (click "Families" > "Online School Payments").

🚌 Transportation: Get bus and shuttle information.

👋 Meet & Greet: Tour the building and connect with teachers!

ℹ️ IMPORTANT SCHOOL UPDATES

Schedules & Requesting Changes: Guidance is finalizing student schedules to ensure everyone stays on track for graduation and their academy. If a change is necessary, Ms. Melton will send out official request procedures soon.

Senior Make-Up Pictures: Thursday, August 20 at 9:00 AM. Required for any rising senior who missed the May picture day!

Rising Senior Vaccine Requirement: Per NC state law, all Class of 2027 seniors must receive their 2nd dose of the meningococcal vaccine (even for virtual learning). Please schedule an appointment with your doctor or Catawba County Public Health, and contact our school nurse with any questions.

⚠️ DISTRICT POLICY REMINDERS

💧 Clear Water Bottles Only: Opaque containers (Stanley cups, Yetis, metal bottles, etc.) are not allowed. Only clear bottles may be used.

📱 Cell Phone Policy: Cell phones are strictly prohibited during class per state rules. Please help us maintain an effective learning environment, as discipline policies will be enforced.

Senior Make-Up Pictures: Thursday, August 20 @ 9:00 AM

Who: Any rising senior who did NOT get their senior pictures taken in May.

HCAM Open House: Friday, August 21

Drop-in Session Times: 9:00–11:00 AM | 12:00–3:00 PM | 4:00–6:00 PM

Details: Drop in to meet your teachers, pick up schedules, tour the building, get transportation/shuttle details, pay fees, and more!

📋 Schedules & Schedule Changes
Infinite Campus Updates: What you currently see in Infinite Campus is not final. Our team is actively tweaking the master schedule, so you may notice temporary gaps or issues in your student's schedule. Everything will be finalized by the end of next week!

Schedule Changes: Procedures for requesting a schedule change will be sent out as we get closer to the start of school.

⚠️ Policy Reminders (Districtwide Enforcement)
🥤 Clear Water Bottles ONLY: All water bottles must be completely clear. Opaque containers—including Stanley cups, Yetis, and solid tumblers—are not permitted.

📱 Cell Phones: Cell phones cannot be out during class time. Period. HCAM will strictly enforce the state cell phone rule. Refusal to follow these rules will carry disciplinary consequences, so let's start the year off right!

💉 Senior Vaccination Requirement
