At this point in history, most of us have been bit by a tick, flea, mite, spider or mosquito that carries Lyme/coinfections. And they also carry other nasty, horrific pathogens that can cause horrible, unexplained illnesses.
Most healthy people's immune systems can fight these pathogens off, but if someone who has these latent pathogens gets sick, has surgery, is exposed to toxic environmental substances (like molds or heavy metals), or even gets an immunization, it can tip the scale and allow the pathogens to run amok in the body (because the immune system is working so hard to heal from that other factor that the pathogens get a chance to proliferate).
Anyone with Long-COVID, or who has been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, POTS, PANS/PANDAS, MS, ALS, Osteo or Rumatoid Arthritis ... would be very wise to get a specialty test for Lyme and associated diseases. Otherwise you really haven't turned over every stone. But you need to understand that there is a MASSIVE difference between the test your doctor will give you for Lyme disease, and the specialty tests I am talking about. The one your doctor gives you only tests for 1 pathogen: Borrelia Burgdorferi. Also, it is only about 50% accurate. So half the time that someone ACTUALLY DOES HAVE LYME DISEASE, the doctors tell the patient they are negative and have ruled it out. This sends patients away from this diagnosis, and can cause a VERY BIG PROBLEM if, in fact, the patient does have it but can't make enough antibodies to show a positive titre test.
There are MUCH BETTER TESTS, that don't only look for Lyme, but also for Babesia, Bartonella (cat scratch fever), Anaplasmosis, Erlichiosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Tick Borne Relapsing Fever, EBV, Strep, Herpes, Chlamydia and many others. Insects carry all of these pathogens and MORE. And your doctor likely won't have a clue how to test for these organisms using the right kind of test.
I realize it's not research, but just in my own practice as a functional Lyme Literate Therapist and Health Coach, I've seen a high correlation between people with long COVID and Lyme/coinfections. I think COVID is bringing out latent pathogens like these vector borne ones, and the pathogens must be dealt with for the Long-C to go away.
Even if someone has had a "negative Lyme test" from their conventional doctor, it is very possible the test was inaccurate. As mentioned, there are much better, specialty tests on the market This is often what happens. People get CRAZY symptoms with Lyme. It attacks the body in so many different ways depending on the specific person's makeup, that it "mimics" other diseases (they even call Lyme "the great imitator").
Unfortunately the CDC has not done a really great job of being accurate about Lyme (as mentioned, it can live a LONG time in your body, dormant, and activate when a trigger like a stressor -- even like having a baby -- causes it to proliferate because immune system in the body is working hard to heal from the trauma of the event, and the Lyme are like PARTY TIME, and suddenly you're debilitated, with the strangest symptoms no doctor can answer for, or they give you some non-diagnosis like fibromyalgia or CFS).
The best test on the market looks for the actual DNA instead of the antibodies (which often are unable to be made against the Lyme/coinfections after they take over the body -- it's a genetic adaptation that the spirochetes, aka Lyme pathogen, have developed over millennia). Vibrant Labs Tick Borne Zoomer 2.0 offers genetic, PCR testing (here is a link to the test: https://www.vibrant-wellness.com/test/TickborneDiseases )
Unfortunately, insurance doesn't cover this test, and it is very expensive. Most doctors don't know about it. I'm not a Doctor but I am a licensed practitioner and became a provider for this lab so I could help people figure this out, the same way I was helped by other people in the Lyme community.
****I don't make a cent on doing this.*** I just order the test for people after a free 30 minute consultation. And the patients get the results in their portal at no additional cost. The patient just pays the lab for the test, directly. I receive no commission (check with the lab. Practitioners make nothing by ordering this test. Some other practitioners might mark the test up. But I leave myself 100% out of the fees, so that there is no conflict of interest).
It could give you answers if you have mysterious , unexplained illnesses. It tests for like 40 different pathogens. If anyone reading this wants me to order this test, reach out to me. I'm not here to make any money on this. I am only doing this to help, and to pay it forward as others did for me and my family. May we all enjoy good health!
