Thursdays are ELECTIVE DAY at A One-Room Schoolhouse! 🎉 Each week, we’ll spotlight one of the amazing elective classes offered across our four campuses: Plum, Franklin Park, Hickory, and Washington.

Today, we’re exploring Science Explorers at our Hickory Campus! 🔍

Designed for students in 3rd grade through high school, this hands-on class makes science an adventure! Students dive into experiments, investigations, and discovery, spending nine weeks exploring each of the four major branches of science. 🧬⚗️🌎

Because science is even more exciting when you can get your hands on it! 🙌

🌿 WALK THROUGH WEDNESDAY: A Glimpse Into Our Day

What happens during a typical day at A One-Room Schoolhouse? We’re taking you along—one segment at a time!

First up: 8:30–9:00 — Morning Time. ☀️

We gather together, share with one another, talk about our schedule and the weather, and discuss a current event with our older students.

But woven into our morning is something uniquely Schoolhouse: Habits of Learning & Habits of Friendship—a curriculum written specifically for A One-Room Schoolhouse to intentionally teach the social, emotional, and executive-function skills children need to succeed, all rooted in Christian values and Scripture.

Then we pray together and say the Pledge of Allegiance. 🙏🇺🇸

Recently, I was talking with a mom who had returned to the Schoolhouse after a difficult season of life. She became tearful as she reflected on how much meaning the Schoolhouse had brought to her family—and what an honor it was to educate her children in a place where their day begins this way.

These 30 minutes matter. ❤️

🌟 Teacher Tuesday: Meet Genevieve! 🌟

We’re kicking off our Teacher Tuesday series with someone pretty special to the Schoolhouse community — Genevieve Peterson, our founder and Executive Director!

📍 Campus: Hickory
🏔️ Classroom: Peak
🔬 Specialties: Math & Science
❤️ Years at A One-Room Schoolhouse: 7 years

Genevieve has taught students across every level of the Schoolhouse, but today you’ll most often find her working with our Peak students, especially in math and science.

Seven years ago, A One-Room Schoolhouse began with an idea, a vision, and a whole lot of faith. What started as a small school has grown into the Schoolhouse community we know today — and Genevieve is still right in the middle of it, teaching, leading, problem-solving, and dreaming about what comes next.

One of the things she loves most about the Schoolhouse is getting to watch students grow from needing lots of guidance to becoming confident, independent learners who are ready to take on the next stage of life.

And if you know Genevieve, you know she is never too far from a math problem, a science question, or a new idea for the Schoolhouse! 😉

We’re excited to introduce you to the teachers who make our Schoolhouse community what it is. Stay tuned every Tuesday as we meet another member of our incredible teaching team!

At A One-Room Schoolhouse, we don’t believe a student’s learning journey can be defined by a grade level.

Instead, our students move through **Meadow → River → Ridge → Summit** — four stages designed to reflect not only what students are learning, but how they are growing as learners.

🌱 **Meadow**
Students build their foundations with lots of teacher guidance, developing the skills and confidence they need to become capable learners.

🌿 **River**
Students continue building academic skills while beginning to take greater ownership of their work and learning.

⛰️ **Ridge**
Students begin developing real independence — learning to manage their work, make decisions, solve problems, and take greater responsibility for their education.

🏔️ **Summit**
Students are preparing to step beyond the Schoolhouse. They are challenged to take ownership of their learning, pursue their interests, develop leadership, and prepare for what comes next.

The goal isn't simply to move from one level to the next.

**The goal is to grow from being guided, to being supported, to becoming independent, capable, and ready for the next stage of life.**

That is the Schoolhouse learning journey. ❤️

A huge thank you to Living Treasures Animal Park for welcoming our Schoolhouse students! 🦉🦘🐢

We are currently learning about Kingdoms and Classification through The Good and the Beautiful, and getting to see these animals up close helped make what we're learning in our books feel real.

We value opportunities for our students to see, observe, ask questions, and connect what they're learning to the world around them.

The first week at Franklin Park was full of learning, discovery, and a little adventure! 🌿📚
We started our days with morning prayer, then jumped into everything from a hands-on history archaeology excavation of Ancient Greek jars to focused math instruction.
Our students also explored the joy of learning beyond the traditional classroom—with tap class, kitchen science, and forest exploration following our nature studies lessons.
It’s been a week of asking questions, trying new things, building friendships, and discovering that learning can happen just about anywhere!
What a wonderful way to begin the journey at A One-Room Schoolhouse!

A beautiful first week at Plum Campus! 🌿📚
Our students jumped right into science and history, made time for plenty of recess action with both new and old friends, and began one of our favorite Schoolhouse traditions—nature journaling.
We kicked off our Art of Nature nature study with “The Beauty Around Me,” taking time to slow down, notice, and capture some of the beauty found right outside our doors.
It has been a wonderful beginning to a new year of learning, friendship, curiosity, and discovery. We can’t wait to see where the journey takes us! 🍂💚

✨ What a great first week at Hickory Campus! ✨

We’re off to a wonderful start to the school year! From old friends reconnecting and new friendships beginning, to everyone gathering together for lunch, it’s been so much fun seeing our schoolhouse community come alive again. ❤️

Our students have been busy building, exploring, experimenting, and bringing history to life—from robotics and engaging science lessons to reenacting the battle between Athens and Sparta!

There’s a lot of learning happening, but even more joy, connection, curiosity, and fellowship. What a great way to begin the year! 📚🔬🤖🏛️

Hickory, you’re off to a fantastic start! 🎉

Today, the doors of A One-Room Schoolhouse open for a new year.

Our classrooms are ready. Our teachers are ready. And our students are beginning another year of learning, growing, discovering, and becoming.

This year, our students will journey through Meadows, Rivers, Ridges, and Summits—different stages, different paths, but one schoolhouse community.

As we begin, we’re choosing to look forward with hope, kindness, grace, and encouragement.

I shared a little more about my hopes and prayers for our students, teachers, and families as we begin this new year.
