Join us on Monday, October 12th, and Monday, October 19th, from 7-8 pm for a virtual 2-part event featuring Dr. Devin Kearns.

Dr. Kearns will present Dyslexia: What it is and What Kind of Instruction Will Help. Dr. Kearns is the Goodnight Distinguished Professor In Early Literacy at the North Carolina State University.

In this session, attendees will learn: the nature of dyslexia and how it results in reading difficulty and elements of instruction that are essential for the success for students with dyslexia.

This event is in alignment with the International Dyslexia Association’s Sharpened Vision: Structured Literacy in Every Classroom.

Automaticity frees the brain to focus on meaning.

Reading takes a tremendous amount of mental effort when every word has to be carefully decoded.

As reading skills become more automatic, something important happens: the brain has more capacity available to think about what the words actually mean.

That's one reason developing accurate, increasingly automatic word recognition matters. Reading isn't simply about getting through the words on the page. Ultimately, it's about understanding, learning, imagining, and connecting ideas.

For students with dyslexia, building that automaticity can take more explicit instruction and practice—but every skill that becomes more fluent frees up a little more energy for comprehension.
