Kellogg Biological Station Long-term Ecological Research Program The KBS LTER is part of a national network of LTER sites established by the National Science Foundation in 1980.

MSU’s Kellogg Biological Station Long-term Ecological Research (KBS LTER) program was started in 1988 to provide science-based information on how to make farming both good for the environment and profitable for farmers. ntists are addressing questions such as:

• How does tillage affect soil quality?
• How do beneficial insects like ladybugs help farmers grow healthy crops?
• How does change agriculture affect climate change?
• How can we manage the land to produce food AND improve the environment? While the lifespan of most agricultural research projects is only a few years, KBS LTER research has been going on for over twenty years! Long-term research is important to really understand how crops respond to rare events, for example droughts and insect pest outbreaks. It also allows scientists to study processes that take a long time to play out, such as changes in soil quality and tree growth. We’re excited to share with you how we do our research and some of what we have learned over the last 20 years!

The Kellogg Biological Station's Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) site and Michigan State University Extension will co-host the fourth annual LTAR Field Day on Thursday, September 3. The event will highlight five years of regenerative agriculture research focused around integrating perennials into row crop systems, adopting no-till and tracking changes in profitability. Researchers at Michigan State University have helped pull one of the world's rarest butterflies back from the brink of extinction.

🟢At one point during the recovery effort, more Poweshiek skipperlings lived in captivity than existed in the wild.

🟢Michigan has become one of the world's last refuges for several endangered butterflies.

🟢This research connects conservation, habitat restoration, climate change, pesticide use and ecosystem collapse.

Working alongside many partners including John Ball Zoo, Minnesota Zoo, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the team transformed one of North America's most vulnerable butterflies into a growing conservation success.

“We were actually able to save that species from extinction,” says David Pavlik, research assistant at MSU's Kellogg Biological Station and John Ball Zoo, who has spent years helping lead the recovery effort. “We released 102 butterflies in 2022 and more than 1,300 butterflies in 2025.”

We had a great day visiting Stocchiero Farms in Bangor, Michigan, one of our MiSTRIPS farms! Along with Van Buren CD and Native Connections we got to hear from Tony and his experience with as part of his regenerative practices. Tony has a great farm stand and sells a wide range of produce from their farm, including apples, corn, melon, and peppers!
