Maria Tallchief (Osage) revolutionized ballet, being the first American major prima ballerina and the first Native American to hold the rank. 🩰

A dancer from the age of three, Tallchief combined speed, precision, athleticism, and perfect technical ability with an electrifying passion. She left American audiences spellbound in her 1949 role in The Firebird, which catapulted her into the international spotlight and earned her the major prima ballerina title. Her performance as the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker—at the time an obscure ballet—was so radiant and enchanting that it propelled The Nutcracker into an American holiday classic.

Few have achieved Tallchief’s mastery of the craft, and she is regarded as one of the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century.

This , we urge you to learn more about our Native women who’ve made history. ✨

“Teachings: Culture and Science Come Together”

CLIMATE CHANGE

In the Ojibwe world-view, natural resources ARE cultural resources. Seasonal subsistence migration and treaty harvest was and is a way to stay healthy: physically, socially, and spiritually. However, warmer winters, increasing extreme precipitation events, more occurrences of drought, and earlier ice out dates across the 1854 Ceded Territory already are affecting flora and fauna that are imperative to the culture, history, well-being, and life-ways of the Anishinaabeg. 1854 Treaty Authority Climate staff, Hilarie Sorensen and Tyler Kaspar, share some of the documented changes in weather patterns in the region. They will discuss the various monitoring projects that 1854 facilitates to watch over these changes, such as measuring ice thickness and snowpack, recording inland lake temperature and dissolved oxygen levels, and the timing of phenological events like wild rice growth, annual sugar maple sap run, and amphibian spring calling.

* Prize drawings at each Zoom (must be present to win)
* Continuing Education Credit (CEUs) provided on request
* Recorded programs available on 1854 YouTube channel and SLCHS website following live program

Boozhoo!
My name is Natalie and I am the new Museum Technician at Kay-Nah-Chi-Wah-Nung Historical Centre. When I was the Museum Assistant from 2019-2020 I started sharing some of the amazing 15,000 items in our care.

Well, after a break (and almost a year later, wild!), I am back amidst the collection and we are going to continue these posts to better share these items with all of you. Yay!

The ‘Object of the Day’ posts will begin on Wednesday, February 10th and will continue every other Wednesday. These posts will be some of the items that we house here at the Mounds.

“Guess the Object’ will begin on Monday, February 15th, and will continue every other Monday. These posts will feature either a close-up photo of an item or a picture of an unusual item for you to guess what it is. Be sure to check back every following Friday to see if you were right. Stay tuned!

Hibbing Schools Covid Update

Friday, December 11, 2020

Dear Hibbing Schools Staff, Families, and Community Members,

Based on local public health trends, the Mn. Dept. of Education, the Mn. Dept of Health, and St. Louis County Health, the Hibbing School Board unanimously decided on Nov. 23 to remain in distance learning PK-12. The board set the date of return as Jan. 26th with a review of this decision to be made at the Jan. 6th regular board meeting. The board also directed myself, and our administrative team, to evaluate this decision daily and if circumstances improve, to make an immediate recommendation to the board to return to in-person.

Given the current state of the pandemic, I do not foresee any short-term change in conditions that will dictate a safe return back to in-person. I am hopeful that we can discuss the return of all students to in-person or hybrid, or at the very least our elementary students, shortly after the holiday break. To accomplish this we will need to have guidance/support from the Mn. Dept. of Education, control of local community covid spread, a healthy staff that can return to classroom teaching, and the commitment of our community in following safe covid protocols that support our return.

11/12/2020

[ISD701] As directed by MDH, the Hibbing Schools PK-grade 12 will begin a Covid-19 Reset on Monday, November 16. Classes will resume with our current learning models on Tuesday, December 1. This return may be reevaluated based on local conditions. All school activities, meals, and daycare will be closed.
