On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that enslaved people were free, officially ending slavery in the United States.
But here's what many don't realize: President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation two and a half years earlier, on January 1, 1863. Enslaved people in Texas didn't receive that news until soldiers physically delivered it.
That gap between freedom declared and freedom delivered is exactly why Juneteenth still matters today.
It became a federal holiday in 2021, but Black communities have been celebrating it for over 150 years. It is a day of music, food, family, reflection, and joy.
