I was doing dishes when my youngest, Aspen said “I’m scared.” She was streaming a movie with her sister. I was headed into the living room to check on the situation, when her older sister said, “I got you.”
It’s the same phrase Norah used when Aspen was stung by a wasp over the summer and she gave her a piggyback ride to the car. It’s the same phrase she used when Aspen couldn’t reach the cornflakes, or she wanted to borrow Norah’s jacket because she couldn’t find hers, or when she was afraid to get on the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney world.
It’s a phrase that Norah has said to her younger sister a million times, and each time, I feel in complete awe of their relationship. Sure, they fight. Yes, there are times that I want to put them in different parts of the country to stop the yelling. But when Aspen really needs someone, Norah, almost always, without question, says “I got you.”
As a child I lived through 7 marriages. My father was married 4 times and my mother 3. I had more step siblings than I can count. Family came and went with the weather.
But that’s not the life my daughters have.
I have no doubt that Norah will be saying “I got you” for the rest of her life. And eventually, Aspen is going to say it too.
By the time I made it into the living room, I found Aspen nestled in her sisters arms, still nervous, but content. And I couldn’t help but give Aspen a comforting kiss on the forehead, and Norah a subtle high five for helping her sister feel safe.
And I couldn’t help but realize that this is exactly the kind of relationship I longed for as a child, and I’m so very grateful that my daughters are experiencing it.
