Management decisions made now and in the aftermath of the drought can have long-term impacts on grazing resources. Grazing management decisions will directly influence the ability of rangelands and pastures to recover from drought and can increase a ranch's drought resilience.

North Dakota State University Extension specialists say ranchers should have a grazing management plan in place that includes the possibility of drought continuing into the 2027 growing season. https://www.ag.ndsu.edu/news/newsreleases/2026/august/grazing-management-key-to-drought-recovery-and-resilience

A new threat to North Dakota's conifers has been confirmed this week: pine wilt disease. This discovery will have a great impact on our state's windbreaks and community forest resources, as non-native species of pine (like Scotch pine) are a commonly used tree in these settings.

While investigating mortality in Scotch pine trees, our Forest Health staff tentatively identified pine wilt disease in Ransom County at Sheyenne River State Forest and in Sargent County near Forman, ND. The finding was confirmed on August 11, 2026, by the South Dakota State University plant pathology lab.

It is getting to be that time of year! What is your go to school snack?

Fruit leathers are nutritious, high-energy snacks for children and adults. Fruit leathers are portable, making them convenient additions to school lunchboxes or backpacks.

The following fruits were rated as “excellent” or “good” by the University of Georgia for preparing fruit leather: apples, apricots, berries, cherries, nectarines, peaches, pears, pineapple, plums and strawberries.
