Cal-Earth Institute 💚
Our online Natural Building Course began this week! We’ll be keeping registration open until August 15th for any of you who still want to join us. The first live session and Q&A with instructors Sasha Rabin ( Earthen Shelter ) and John Orcutt ( Nomadic Builder ) is Saturday morning. All live sessions will be recorded for students who need to watch later. Join or learn more about the course here… quailsprings.org/courses/online-natural-building-course/

As the Quail Springs Natural Building Director, Sasha is a strong leader in our efforts to progress building policy and codes to make fire-safe earthen building more accessible. She also serves on our Board of Directors and the Board of the CRI - Cob Research Institute . Sasha has been teaching natural building for twenty years, half of that while residing at Quail Springs.

After a few years studying alternative building styles and building earthbag with a crew from Cal-Earth Institute , John came to Quail Springs in 2016 to learn cob, and soon moved here, joining Sasha as a Natural Building instructor and advocate.

We are excited to be offering this online course with these two again this year, and hope you choose to join them. They’ll be available online for instruction and consultation with students through December 8th, and you’ll have access to all other content until February 8th.

Register here today… quailsprings.org/courses/online-natural-building-course/

I've signed up for the April 9th Cal-Earth course.

Are there any Cal-Earth veterans with any suggestions on where to stay locally in Hesperia? TYIA ❤
A fantastic building we completed in 2020 at Sihirli Tohumlar Permakültür Çiftliği, based on a unique design by M. Pedergnana. The idea is to have a large thermal mass (an earthbag semi-dome) enclosed in a slipstraw-insulated wood structure carrying a hemp-insulated reciprocal green roof. 80m2 of living space, 3 rooms, a living room, a bathroom, a kitchen, 2 storages and a terrace 😃

Cal-Earth Institute, a sustainable cluster of SuperAdobe buildings in the Mojave Desert, is revered around the globe for its Earth-friendly materials and methods.

It was the brainchild of the late architect Nader Khalili (1936-2008), who developed his revolutionary designs for possible lunar use by NASA, and as a freely available housing option for the world's homeless.

Dubbed among the most "environmentally friendly homes" on Earth, Khalili's adobe creations are warm in the winter, and cool in the summer.

Highlights of Khalili's sustainable architecture buildings include the Moon Cocoon (a 400-square-foot dome house with four pods which can be used as a living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom); Emergency Sandbag Shelters (beehive-like structures made with sandbags and barbed wire); and the Earth One House (made to withstand California's strict earthquake building codes, harsh summer temperatures, and floods).

“Superadobe is an adobe that is stretched from history into the new century," said Khalili. "It is like an umbilical cord connecting the traditional with the future adobe world.”

Cal-Earth workshops, where you'll learn the fundamentals of building your own eco-friendly dome home, are scheduled throughout the year. Mini Open Houses are scheduled for March 5 and April 2, 2022. Cost is $15.

Cal-Earth is located at 10177 Baldy Lane, Hesperia. For more information, go to CalEarth.com or call 760-486-2031.

I'm really impressed with superadobe from the Cal-Earth Institute! I’d be building my dome home right now if it wasn’t for those pesky building permits! 😠
But we'll get there!

Finally got to visit the Cal-Earth Institute!
They’ll teach you how to build your own home out of superadobe!
This stuff ain’t regular ol’ adobe — this is superadobe! It’s a lot stronger making it earthquake resistant for out here in California.

I’ve been following them for awhile so was stoked to visit and actually explore some superadobe domes (and even a full 3bed 2 bath house!)

I’d be building one right now if it wasn’t for the permitting red tape. It’s pretty tough to convince a building department to sign off on this construction method right now but CalEarth is working hard to get their stuff certified and recognized so it’ll hopefully be possible soon!
Thanks to The Mud Home for this very well written and detailed blog post about the guesthouse we built at Sihirli Tohumlar Permakültür Çiftliği

SuperAdobe is designed to work with in harmony with earth’s surrounding elements, not against it. Read on to learn more about this beautiful dome in Senegal finished with 30 tons of red earth coming from clay termite mounds!

“The small village of Djibelor is sprinkled with epigeous termite mounds (growing above the ground). These invincible fortresses, two meters high, are made of clay soil, cellulose and lignin from wood digested by termites. The termites clay coating allows the earthen walls to breathe continuously. The thermal regulation of the dome works perfectly: its walls are able to absorb and expel moisture permanently, thus controlling the temperature. When it is 95 °F outside, the dome stays cool inside at 73 °F.” - Rebecca Pelayo

“A big effort was made to use as much local and salvaged material as possible even though this meant more work in sourcing and preparing it. So all the wood used is salvaged from old houses that have been knocked down and the remaining sand used as part of the mix for the walls came from less than a mile away.” - Ayal Bryant
