The Strawbale Dome at Cal-Earth Institute. Built in the 1990s, this dome was built as a research project by students to try and combine more than one natural building system. As a hybrid design, the 25-foot dome includes walls built from superadobe up to 6 feet night, a timber tensile ring, and strawbale roof.

Beautiful superadobe build in Nicaragua!
SuperAdobe is designed to work with in harmony with earth’s surrounding elements, not against it. Read on to learn more about this beautiful dome in Senegal finished with 30 tons of red earth coming from clay termite mounds!
“The small village of Djibelor is sprinkled with epigeous termite mounds (growing above the ground). These invincible fortresses, two meters high, are made of clay soil, cellulose and lignin from wood digested by termites. The termites clay coating allows the earthen walls to breathe continuously. The thermal regulation of the dome works perfectly: its walls are able to absorb and expel moisture permanently, thus controlling the temperature. When it is 95 °F outside, the dome stays cool inside at 73 °F.” - Rebecca Pelayo

“What CalEarth teaches is outwardly prodigious, and undeniably so, but what the general public doesn't see is the aspect of personal development in which every CalEarth student undergoes during their stay. Those of us who have been through Cal Earth's workshops/apprenticeships will know exactly what I am talking about. In my eyes, it is the epitome of the hero's journey.” - Sonny, CalEarth Apprentice and builder of “Tommy’s Tea Dome”

“A big effort was made to use as much local and salvaged material as possible even though this meant more work in sourcing and preparing it. So all the wood used is salvaged from old houses that have been knocked down and the remaining sand used as part of the mix for the walls came from less than a mile away.” - Ayal Bryant
