This week in the Tiger Paws Learning Lab at Herrin High School, the Child Care students all successfully completed the Illinois Mandated Reporter Training. This training covered very important topics surrounding protecting children, having a trauma-informed approach to interacting with children, and connecting children and families to valuable community resources. They are now more proficient in promoting the well-being of all children they work with. As the Child Care class inches towards opening the Tiger Paws Learning Lab to a group of preschoolers at the beginning of October, they are excited to learn more valuable skills and certifications to help them not only while in high school but in their future careers.

After several days of learning and reviewing laboratory safety and essential lab skills, today it was time to put those skills into action! 🥽🧪🔬

Students rotated through a Lab Skills Mini-Lab, with Ms. Lach & Mrs. Jones, where they practiced measuring mass and volume, using electronic and triple-beam balances, reading graduated cylinders, working with a buret, measuring with a meter stick, and safely transferring liquids with pipettes and test tubes.

It was a great way to take everything we’ve been learning in the classroom and apply it in the lab—because sometimes the best way to learn science is to DO science! 👩🏻‍🔬👨🏾‍🔬

It was great day of hands-on learning at HHS! 🐅 🧪

Think libraries are just for borrowing books? Think again!

Mrs. Wheaton's Accelerated English I classes took a deep dive into our library today, discovering that it’s actually the ultimate high-tech research lab, creative hub, and academic launcher pad.

Learning how to navigate modern information systems is a critical skill for coursework. Big thanks to Ms. Misker for empowering our students to research smarter, build stronger arguments, and think critically!

Before exploring Barcelona, these Herrin Tigers got the chance to visit a Roman amphitheatre from 90 AD, a site that once hosted gladiators and now hosts bullfights. In between their strolls through the streets of Barcelona, students got a chance to visit Park Güell and la Sagrada Familia and journey up the mountains to Montserrat, the site of a 12th century, wooden Black Madonna figure. After eight days in Europe, they enjoyed one final moonlight night on the Mediterranean Sea before flying back across the Atlantic.

These Herrin students and their families got a chance to see history and culture come to life, expand their perspectives, and make new friendships along the way! Their journey may be over but look out soon for new opportunities to travel the world from Mr. Recuero!

Herrin High School lost a truly dear friend with the passing of Gary “C***k” Childers.

C***k served as a beloved custodian at HHS from 1985 to 2004, but to us, he was so much more than that. He was a constant source of joy, kindness, and warmth—leaving an unforgettable mark on generations of students, teachers, and administrators.

Thank you, C***k, for all the great memories. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Our Herrin world travelers have been busy exploring these past few days! They swam in the Mediterranean as they visited the towns that make up Cinque Terre, soaked in the views of the Italian coast by ferry, walked the streets of the city state of Monaco, toured the factory of one of the oldest perfume companies in France, took in the wonders of the city of Nice, and were guided through the beautiful, historic community of Saint-Paul de Vence that overlooked the French coast. Tomorrow we head to Spain for the last leg of our travels!
