Yesterday brought a long list of weather-related experiences that we would all love to forget—the end result of which meant our safest (and only) option was to sleep on our bus. Or at least try to. Some of us were more successful than others.

And not once, given opportunity after opportunity, did anyone give up. Not once did anyone say I wish we were going home. We collected ourselves in the bathrooms of the ISU student center this morning at 6:15. We devoured an absolutely angelic delivery of McDonald’s hash browns and biscuits. And we went to do some math.

You know what happened next? These students, who qualified as the 9th best team in our division heading into the state contest, acted like they slept last night at the Ritz-Carlton. Because all they did was move up two places to earn 7th, the best HHS has finished in the last nine years!

The HHS Math Team is the 7th best division 2A—and the number two public school—in the state of Illinois!

We will follow up with more details, celebrating many of our teams and individuals who won plaques and medals for their events. But for now, we want you to know how proud these special students make us, make you, and make our school.

Our night may have been dark, but joy comes in the morning! They’re gritty, they’re resilient, and they just make us (Coaches Harlow & Howerton) about as proud as we’ve ever been to lead the HHS Math Team.

Big thanks again to the Herrin Grant Office for the charter bus support and more thanks to Robyn Davis for bringing McDonald’s to our tired, hungry crew.

We’re off to Bloomington-Normal and Illinois State University for the ICTM State Math Contest! Wish these dedicated Tigers good luck tomorrow as they take on the best high school mathematicians in the state!

Champions once more!

We were back in action today at the SIU Carbondale Math Field Day, joining over 800 students from Southern Illinois—and the Herrin Math Team rose to the top!

Among individual competitors, Cole Brandon placed 6th and Cole Walker 5th in the Freshman division. Garrett Grant earned an honorable mention in the Sophomore division, while Miles Ellet placed 9th, Kari Eggemeyer 5th, and Nathan Jones 3rd.

In the Junior division, Michael Bergman placed 8th, Asher Barlage 7th, and Logan Groves 3rd. Jack Parrish earned an honorable mention in the Senior division, and Tyler Dodson placed 3rd.

As grade-level teams, Herrin placed 2nd in the Sophomore division and earned 1st place finishes in the Freshman, Junior, and Senior divisions.

Overall, Herrin brought home the team trophy at one of the toughest contests on our schedule. Congratulations to all of our Herrin Math Team members!
