“How Can I Keep From Singing?” 🏔️🕊️

Share this song with someone you know who may be interested in the kind of vocal development this type of song demands! Working to improve technically while remaining sensitive both vocally and emotionally in the midst of performing an emotionally challenging piece is a big ask for a developing singer!

DESIRED SKILLS: vulnerability, vocal control, staying in key unaccompanied, successfully navigating a key change a capella, connecting and unifying all vocal registers (chest/middle/head/falsetto)

I have sung this beloved old Irish tune in many different kinds of settings and arrangements over the years, but this particular a Capella version puts the singer in a very vulnerability position—being completely exposed, singing unaccompanied, and staying exactly in key especially while navigating a third verse key change, are all difficult technical skills to accomplish as a singer. I wanted to show myself more exposed here, and though it’s perhaps not the most technically perfect recording I have performed, I actually love and can appreciate the way my vulnerability and imperfections shine through my voice at times because of the many different painful and even devastating life circumstances I have gone through over the years… I love the lyrics of this folk hymn, and the more life experiences I have that continue to break me down and soften me into a (hopefully) somewhat better person, as I sing this song now I almost can’t help but sing words like, “since love is lord of heaven and earth… how can I keep from singing…?”, and have my voice catch…… through pain and sorrow and loss I have suffered—and yet these words have become etched on the fleshy tables of my heart with a great belief in the truth that it is a loving, personal, merciful, and eternal Father in Heaven who exists and rules over this world, and who created us and watches over and helps us, and has not left us alone. And so my voice may slightly waver or break with a moment of true emotion as I sing these words that have come to mean so much to me. I believe that can be part of the beauty of having the courage to perform a vulnerable piece of music.
