From an unauthorized engineering project to one of Collins Radio's most successful HF receivers... The Collins 51S-1 communications receiver began almost by accident. While Collins engineers were developing the S-Line in the late 1950s, engineers Gene Senti, W0ROW, and Ed Andrade, W0DAN, decided that the aging 51J-4 receiver could be improved. They began developing a new receiver. But there was one problem: The project wasn't officially authorized.

The engineers quietly continued developing prototypes. When management discovered what they were doing, the project was nearly shut down. Instead, the prototype was demonstrated to Collins executives, who were so impressed with its performance that the receiver was approved for production.

The Collins 51S-1 was introduced in 1962, covering 200 kHz to 30 MHz continuously and receiving AM, CW, USB and LSB.

Leroy Moffat, Jr., 5HK, 105-foot-long, 93-foot-high inverted-L cage aerial was built from six parallel wires, held apart by wooden spacers to form a massive wire cage. The vertical section served as the radiator, while the horizontal section provided capacitive top-loading to improve the antenna’s performance in 1922.

Beneath it, Moffat installed a fan-shaped counterpoise, suspended just a foot above the ground. The entire system was driven by a 1-kilowatt rotary spark-gap transmitter.
