Compass students got to meet Ocean Invertebrates last week in the Animal Kingdom Alive program! Kids met crabs, conchs, mussels, sponges, sea stars, and more. The critters that couldn't be petted were in a tank at the front of the room and projected on a giant screen for everyone to see.

Congratulations to Sabrina, the Compass Senior Spelling Bee Champion for 2024. Sabrina will represent Compass at the Fairfax County Spelling Bee on March 17. There was a lot of interest and excitement about band at today’s instrument test drive!

02/21/2024

REMINDER: Band Instrument Test Drive Event This Afternoon (Feb. 21)
Remember that today, Wednesday, February 21, is your child’s chance to touch a trombone, hold a horn, click a clarinet, and strike a snare! Try these instruments and others at today’s Instrument Test Drive at Compass. Representatives from the Music & Arts store will have test instruments set up in Suite D near the main desk from 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm. Location is 520 Herndon Parkway, Suite D. This is a drop-in event open to all homeschoolers, whether or not they take classes at Compass yet.

Students will have an opportunity to handle and try different instruments. The new Compass band director, Jessica Eastridge, will be on hand to answer questions about the spring band clinics, summer band camp, and Compass’s plans for a 2024-25 homeschool concert band. While the fall band is projected for students in 4th-8th grades, we will be keeping a list of interested older or younger students so Compass can consider other level bands or smaller ensembles.

This Test Drive event introduces students to the choices of band instruments. Band is often cited as a school experience that parents worry that their homeschooled kids will miss out on. For those considering the 2024-25 homeschool band, Compass is offering three, 8-week spring clinics to introduce students in 4th-8th grades to their new instruments. Register online for:

- Band-Ready Spring Clinic: Percussion (Mondays, 10am starting March 18)
- Band-Ready Spring Clinic: Woodwinds (Mondays, 11am starting March 18)
- Band-Ready Spring Clinic: Brass (Mondays, 12pm starting March 18)

Compass is also host to the Dulles Area Summer Band Camp, scheduled from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm the week of July 29 – August 2. Registration begins March 5.

Compass will open on time today, Tuesday, February 13. Classes begin at 10:00 am, so we have a built-in delayed start. There is a light snow fall, but the day's temperatures will remain above freezing, so we do not anticipate any problems. Our families commute from all around the region so, as always, they are advised to make their own determinations based on the conditions in their neighborhoods.

Compass Closed Today, Jan. 15, 2024

All in-person Compass classes and activities scheduled for today, Monday, January 15, will be cancelled. This morning’s light snowfall and below freezing temperatures have left slushy and icy patches on the roadways. In addition, the property managers at Compass’s Herndon facility will not be plowing the parking lots or treating the sidewalks today because of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Enjoy the stay-home day and watch announcements for a possible additional cancellation of Tuesday classes and events because of the next predicted wave of wintery weather.

The Monday missed classes will be made up on Monday, March 11 at the same time, same rooms as scheduled.
