During her 15 years teaching in Fairfax County public schools, Carole Nysmith noticed a shortfall in challenging classes for children with advanced intellectual abilities, so she came up with a strategy to teach kids "turned off by education" because they were being taught things they already knew. She later decided to take her methods private and in 1983, she started the Nysmith School for the Gi
fted. Focused on accelerated science and technology programs in small classes with a 9 to 1 student-teacher ratio, the school opened with more than 50 kids.
