Next up in our lineup of show-stopping Dance Teacher Awardees is Sheela Ramanath! 🌟

When students and peers speak about Sheela Ramanath, the artistic director and founder of Sheela Ramanath in Virginia, several words come up over and over: “humility,” “community,” “dedication” (to name only a few). These are values they say Ramanath not only practices every day but also imparts to her pupils—passed down in tandem with the technique and artistry of bharatanatyam that she inherited from her own teacher, Guru B. Bhanumati.

“The core principles of Indian philosophy—commitment, consistency, respect, empathy—all these elements are infused while I teach,” Ramanath tells Dance Teacher Magazine. “And this need not be just Indian culture. This is universal.”

The journey that never ends …

It’s true that a lifetime is not sufficient to master any classical art form, and Bharatanatyam is no exception. The journey truly begins when a student realizes they’ve barely scratched the surface. That’s what an Arangetram journey does to a student. Although I never mandate that a student should perform their arangetram, there’s no denying that it is a highly transformative journey, and humbling one in that. It is a litmus test of a student’s dedication and true commitment to it. It tests one’s patience, endurance, and focus like none other. As the training unfolds, the true nature, worth, and personality of a student are revealed. Knowing fully well that performing one’s arangetram is only the beginning, it should be looked more in terms of self- discovery and self - improvement rather than focusing on the end result - which is the performance. In a nutshell, it’s the journey that is more important than the destination.
That said, I am beyond amazed at the fortitude and will power of my students who push themselves, not to prove anything to the world , but to simply honor what the art demands of them. They surrender to the art and imbue the essence of it. For this, I couldn’t be more proud of them. My heart is filled with gratitude to my Guru whose wisdom and knowledge continue to guide me every step of the way.

On July 15th, our guru, Sheela Ramanath, was conferred this prestigious recognition by the Council of Educators for her stewardship and vision, at Lisbon, Portugal. This honor is conferred in recognition of her leadership and exceptional standards in performing arts. In addition to this, she is also given the Accomplished Performer Credential and Bharatanatyam Conversatory Credential.
