It’s Upper School Class Trip week! From a college road trip to the Scottish Highlands, our students will make memories, enjoy new experiences, and take their learning on the road. Stay tuned for stories and highlights from each trip!

Sophia started her time at Dominion in Kindergarten! Her favorite memories are dressing as a crocodile in the first-grade animal parade, playing mum-ball in fourth grade, and playing sports at the Upper School. She encourages underclassmen to take advantage of the Dominion community to build real lasting relationships and to treat Dominion events and experiences as a way to have meaningful interactions with others.

We loved watching our Science Olympiad team cheer each other on at the medal ceremony.

George has been at Dominion since day one of Kindergarten. He says that the Lower School themed activities such as the Greek Olympics and Hobbit Day were particularly fun, and the field trips at the Upper School have been thrilling. The Shenandoah and Boston trip are easily two favorites! His advice to the underclassmen: “Live life intentionally, and really question why you believe what you do and what the implications are for your life. God's call for us is not just about living reactively to the world; therefore let us not waste what He has given us by living passively and not caring to pursue His call in our lives.”

Our MS Science Olympiad team is heading to States this weekend! They will repeat their regional events and add a few new challenges - Flight, Microbe Mission, Code Analysis, and Experimental Design. We hope they soar to new heights. Go Eagles!

Our first-grade class loves seeing the airplanes and learning all about the different flying machines at the Air and Space Museum!

Abby has been a Dominion student since Kindergarten. She loved stargazing at the Fall Retreat and the West Virginia class trip. She encourages Dominion students to get involved with the community and all of the events! A favorite quote of hers comes from Marilynne Robinson– “Love is holy because it is like grace—the worthiness of its object is never really what matters.”

Our 4th grade classes recently performed The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. They did a delightful job bringing the world of Narnia to life on stage!

Lower school sixth-grade students recently visited the National Gallery of Art. Since they study the Renaissance in history class, they enjoyed both the artwork and the opportunity to visit downtown DC on a beautiful day!

Joshua has attended Dominion Christian School since Kindergarten! One of his favorite Dominion memories is the Barbarian invasion from fifth grade—he loved the costumes, the games, the food, and the boat burning. He also enjoyed the West Virginia trip where there was a good mix of fun with friends and hard work building a trail for others. Joshua says, “The advice I would give to the underclassmen would be to make sure you do not procrastinate, and instead get your work completed on time. I would also say if friends are important to you, make sure you keep in touch with them. I believe I have made lifelong friends at Dominion and am extremely thankful for the Dominion community.”

The Terrible Costs of a Phone-Based Childhood 03/13/2024

WORTH THE READ: In his newest Atlantic article, Jonathan Haidt calls for establishing phone-free schools as one of four norms to roll back a phone-based childhood. "Schools that have gone phone-free always seem to report that it has improved the culture, making students more attentive in class and more interactive with one another. Published studies back them up." Read more below!

The Terrible Costs of a Phone-Based Childhood For a little over a decade, we have been raising children in an environment that is hostile to human development. We need to change that now.

Morgan has been a student at Dominion since Kindergarten. During her years at Dominion, she especially loved the Greek feast in third grade, the ninth grade Boston trip, and her eleventh grade college road trip, and playing on the basketball team. Morgan says, “I would advise the underclassmen to always remain grateful. It is so easy to take for granted or overlook all the wonderful things Dominion—or just life—has to offer. I have found that when I intentionally take note of what I am grateful for (for example, I have a gratitude journal I write in daily), it helps me to enjoy things even more.”

Congratulations to our 5th/6th grade Thrive Basketball team, which won their season championship! We are proud of their hard work and determination on the court.

Taylor has been at Dominion since second grade! One of his favorite Dominion traditions was Hobbit Day in sixth grade, and he also loved all the class trips. Taylor appreciates the words of Winston Churchill, who said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” His advice to the underclassmen is to make time for life outside the classroom, and don’t be afraid to ask for help from teachers.
