It was a special day at Coates as we celebrated the hard work and accomplishments of our 6th graders. Best of luck to these STARS as they move on to middle school. ๐

Coates EAC ๐โs OG! Students in Ms. Sorrellโs kindergarten class enjoy participating in research-based reading instruction so much, they request extra practice during choice time. ๐๐

Earlier this week kindergarten students celebrated their hard work and growth with bubbles, chalk, and popsicles. All students made progress on the Virginia Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening. ๐

The painting club got creative with traditional Japanese tie-dye, creating stunning Shibori t-shirts.

Two dinosaurs were spotted at Coates today! ๐ฆ๐ฆ They were participating in pajama day for our summer vibes spirit week.
Look who's back! Some of our former Stars were walking the halls today, reminiscing and being celebrated! Congrats to the class of 2024 - we are proud of you!! ๐๐๐

Students in Mr. Bell's fourth grade class got a chance to participate in Project Based Learning during their solar system unit. They explored the driving question "How can you design an art installation that communicates your understanding of our solar system?" They were proud to show off their hard work!

Fourth graders had a special visit from some amazing reptiles! Lots of learning and lots of fun!

Third grade scientists in Mrs. Edward's class have been busy learning all about simple machines. The students created a plan and conducted an experiment to show how the use of an inclined plane makes work easier. They then explained in writing or video recording how inclined planes are used today to make work easier. Great connection to their POG focus area of communication!

Last Saturday the Coates Girls on the Run Team had their celebratory 5K race. The rain did not stop the girls from running and having a great time. We are proud of all fifth and sixth graders who participated on this past Girls on the Run season!

Over the last 6 weeks students in our Young Scholars After School Club practiced using their Portrait of a Graduate skills of being Goal Directed and Resilient Individuals and Creative and Critical Thinkers. First through third grade students had the opportunity to redesign or improve a product of their choosing. They then got to build it out of recycled materials. Fourth through sixth graders used the Lego Spike kits to build and code Legos to move. On Thursday evening they showcased their hard work for their families and friends.

Scientists in Mrs. Forteโs class have been learning about a simple machine called a pulley. They sketched and created a plan for the pulley. Then had the opportunity to test their design.

Students were excited to select their summer reading books today. Thanks for Project LIFT for providing this wonderful opportunity to so many of our readers.
Last week our first grade students got a chance to see goats (and many other farm animals) at Coates! ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ

To kick off the start of Mental Health Awareness Month, Mrs. Grubbs and a student were twinning! ๐

Before school clubs are up and running here at Coates! Students are getting the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities to start their day.

Mathematicians in Ms. Irey's class determined mean, median, mode and range using Skittles this week! Students worked in partnerships to gather and chart data.

This week students learned about keeping the earth clean. They collected litter from around the school grounds. Coatesโ campus shines!๐๐

Special thanks to Giant Grocery Store's Nutritionist for a great lesson in Miss Pualoa's Health class. 5th and 6th grade students learned how to plan a My Plate meal on a budget using the stores weekly ad.

5th Graders got to visit the Natural History Museum in DC to see their learning come to life! Students saw how lights create a rainbow, rocks and how they are formed and all sorts of other cool artifacts.

Happy Earth Day! ๐ Mr. Vargas and some student volunteers worked hard to get our raised beds ready for spring planting.

Students in Ms. Pualoa's health classes went "plogging" to help the earth ahead of the 54th anniversary of Earth Day! ๐

Two of our 6th grade musical stars, Avanthika and Adam, participated in the Herndon Area Band. They practiced with the Area Band on four Monday afternoons and participated in the Herndon Pyramid Concert in the HMS Auditorium on the evening of Tuesday, April 16. The audience was packed with family and friends, and they did an amazing job! They learned a lot and had a lot of fun with new friends.

During Creativity Lab students have been busy creating products for National History Day. 4th through 6th graders were tasked with researching a topic they consider a turning point in history. They are excited to share their products with others in the next few weeks!

Second grade mathematicians in Mrs. Shepard's class explored symmetry with pattern blocks and partners.

Yesterday, our school took part in a fascinating astronomical event - a solar eclipse! Students were able to witness the moon partially cover the sun, causing a noticeable decrease in sunlight.

Last week Scientists in Ms. Irey's class explored how light rays bounce off and reflect from a mirror. Team members attempted to aim their flashlights so that light reflected from the mirror and illuminated an index card.
