Exploring the Arabic Nay: An Examination of Sound, Technique, and Application to the Flute Repertoire is to be a lecture recital presented by Dustin White.
Dustin White will perform on both flute and the Arabic nay in a lecture recital that examines the nay and how knowledge of its sound and techniques can influence the performance of Sami Seif's Miniatures from Phoenicia and Katia Makdissi-Warren's Dialogue du silence on the Western flute. The lecture will include a brief overview of the nay and its history and center around the topics of style and technique. Time will be provided at the end for a Q & A.

Dustin White
This is the second performance of the newly composed solo flute work "Tasasul I" by Saad Haddad. "Tasasul" means "sequence" in Arabic, and the composer was inspired by several composers' solo flute writing including Berio, C.P.E. Bach, Yan Maresz, and Abdo Dagher.
Dustin White is particularly interested in the synthesis of new flute music by means of cultural exchange. His debut solo album Ri Ra (2021) explores the intersection of Western contemporary art music and Arabic and Persian flute traditions. His principal teachers include Nina Assimakopoulos, Kenneth Andrews, and John Oberbrunner.
