Welcome, 5th & 6th Grade Teacher-Valerie Richards

My name is Valerie Richards. I am a non-binary, Afro-Latinx. My parents immigrated to the US from Panama in the 1980s and I grew up a little bit of everywhere as a military kid. I am the 5th/6th Grade Teacher and will teach Math, Writing, and Social Studies. I have been a 4th Grade and HS Math Teacher at LWS as well as the K-8 Math Interventionist at PSO. I hold a B.S. in Economics and. M.A. in Education with a focus on Restorative Justice in Education. This year, I will be celebrating my 10th year as a teacher. I am very excited to be at Red Shirt and teach your student. I am looking forward to having a great year together!”

Welcome Julie Nelson- Counselor

Julie (Brunskill) Nelson grew up in western South Dakota and graduated from Philip High School in 1992. This is where her passion for health, education, and student well-being began through athletics, 4-H, and school leadership. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from Black Hills State University in 1999 and later completed a Master of Science in Counseling from Northern State University in 2006.
With nearly 20 years of experience as a school counselor, Julie has worked in elementary, middle school, and pre-K-12 settings across South Dakota, Minnesota, Montana and Wyoming, including public, tribal, and dual-language immersion schools. She also spent time in public health, focusing on health equity for tribal and minority populations.
Julie has been actively involved in professional counseling and wellness organizations and is passionate about addressing poverty's impact on education, su***de & substance use prevention, health disparities, and worksite wellness.
Above all, Julie considers her four sons her greatest accomplishment. She enjoys volunteering, thrift shopping, caring for family and pets, and supporting students in their educational journey! She is proud to serve as a school counselor at Red Shirt Elementary! Go Rumble!

Today, was our Enrollment Celebration🎉 with fun activities like rock painting, the bouncy house, water balloon challenge, and ice cream cones! 🍦One lucky student, who was here all 3 days this week, won the $100 gift card!💲👏🏼👏🏼 Our awesome staff worked together to make a great day of fun! We truly appreciate our students' parents/guardians who make an effort to assure their children have great attendance! 🙌🏽😊
