This weekend brought a sad sight to the opposite end of Nova Scotia – late in the day on Friday a live s***m whale stranded on the shore of western Cape Breton Island. The approximate 40’ animal was incredibly thin and passed through the night.

MARS has been working with colleagues with the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative - Atlantic Veterinary College - AVC and NS Department of Natural Resources and Renewables to ensure a necropsy can be conducted to determine why this animal died. At this time, we do not know why this animal died.

Unfortunately, the animal is not currently in an accessible area so needs to be towed to an appropriate location. Given the incoming weather, this likely won’t be until later this week.

Thank you to all those who reported this animal as well as Fisheries and Oceans Canada personnel and fisheries officers and our MARS volunteer, Liz, for gathering important information to help us determine what can be done.

Behind the scene - from the predator (striped Marlin) point of view. As the Striped Marlin become so popular and many people arriving with cameras small or big. I asked myself how can I take a different picture of the same event of predation. As most people chase the sardine and the Marlins most images are from the back or tail of sardine and the marlin. The sardine ball typically run into the sun in way to confuse the attacking marlin. I had to work hard free diving swimming in front of the bait ball, capturing the image I had in my mind…I wanted you the viewer to see the Marlin eyes 👀 as it is focus on its bait - I hope I did it, your feedback is welcome. Wonderful memories of Spiral Pacific's first trip to the Arctic. We're scheduled to go back to Norway in November to engage in a women's leadership program and to study orcas and humpbacks feeding in the fjords. This time our founder Cynthia Matzke will be joined by SP production coordinator Evin Rose who joins the group as the youngest team member of this group of polar explorers.

Instead, Cynthia and Evin Rose are headed to Norway this winter to see the humpbacks feeding in the fjords! The water won't be quite as clear, but orcas and humpbacks feeding together on the herring is unforgettable.
