Ten days ago our chicks hatched-once again filling our classroom with joy. We look forward to this project every spring; leaning in close to listen for tiny peeps and cheering each chick on as it emerges from its shell, while marveling at the miracle of new life. The students have loved caring for the chicks and noticing how quickly they grow. It’s science coming to life in front of our eyes…

This year also brought the bittersweet lesson that caring for living things can include both joy and sadness. Two chicks didn’t survive the hatching process-a loss the class felt deeply. We were reminded of how fragile life can be, and about the beautiful hope Jesus gives us of a day when there will be no more death, no more pain, and no more goodbyes.
Until then, we treasure the moments of joy we are given. This project always is a gift.

Our classroom recently adopted a baby leopard gecko named Pistachio, providing a new opportunity for hands-on learning. We have explored the needs and characteristics of geckos (and the bugs they eat), are learning how they communicate, have written creative stories about them, and are learning about the parts of the world where they can be found in the wild. Several students enjoy reading to our gecko; with ‘Ten Apples on Top’ appearing to be his favorite. Caring for our new pet and practicing gentle handling is helping our students develop empathy, patience, responsibility, and a deeper appreciation for God’s creation.

We spent the Week of Prayer “traveling through time,” meeting early reformers like Jacoba, the Waldensian believer, Martin Luther, Samuel Crowther, the Bible translator, and Joseph Bates, one of the first Adventist pioneers. We ended the week by looking ahead to what they were all pointing toward, with a glimpse of the New Earth from John’s vision in Revelation and the words of a 17-year-old girl (another SDA pioneer) who also dreamed of heaven. Students took a moment to really imagine what this would be like. We celebrated with an agape feast as a reminder of the table Jesus has prepared for us and the hope we have in Him.
