Matsubayashi-Ryu - is a branch form of Shorin-Ryu Karate-do developed in the Naha Region of Okinawa. This form of karate is characterized by fast movements and highly mobile stances. Matsubayashi-Ryu is an Okinawan martial art born from man's instinct for self-preservation and cultivated by generations of gifted masters who served to improve and pass on effective and useful techniques. Developing

as a method of survival from the early banning of weapons and martial arts training by a conquering entity, the Okinawans practiced techniques in the dark of night hidden away. Matsubayashi-Ryu is a style predicated on survival and lends its study for self defense and not sport competition. Matsubayashi-Ryu was founded in 1947 by Shoshin Nagamine and based on the karate-do taught to him by Ankichi Arakaki(1899 - 1927), Choki Motobu (1871-1944), and Chotoku Kyan (1870-1945). This includes the physical elements of Striking (Atemi), joint locks and manipulations(Tuite), and Body shifting(Tai Sabaki) as well as the non-physical elements of meditation and mind calming techniques (Zazen). The World Matsubayashi-Ryu Karate-do Association (WMKA) is currently under the leadership and guidance of Yosh*taka Taira, Hanshi, 10th Dan after the passing of Soke Takayoshi Nagamine April 27, 2012, son of WMKA founder O'Sensei Shoshin Nagamine.
