Hermiston HS Class of 1970

Hermiston HS Class of 1970 Reunion Canceled 8/27 - 8/29/2021

10/24/2025

This is my idea for this building. I've had this idea, concept for year's. I wish I had the room and the building at my house!! I think this is just what Hermiston needs! I've emailed the Mayor also. Over the years I've shared this idea to no avail. So, I'm hoping this letter will spark something. Read, share and like. I really think this would be special!
Dear City Council Members / Building Department/ Community Development

My name is Kim LaPlant, and I am a local artist of over 35 years and founder of OzarkHippie Studio here in Hermiston. I also taught at the Pendleton Art Center. I recently learned about the plans to repurpose the historic Carnegie Building and I wanted to share an idea that could benefit our entire community for years to come.

I would love to see this beautiful 106-year-old building become a Community Arts and a kind of Creative/ learning Center — a place where creativity, connection, and the community come together. This space could serve children, families, and adults through art and music ( all mediums of art) programs, with a special focus on:

Art classes and after-school programs for children, including those with disabilities or special needs or underprivileged/ low income.

Workshops for veterans and individuals living with PTSD, using art as a form of expression and therapy.

Community art projects, open studio times, and exhibitions to bring local artists together and celebrate Hermiston’s creativity.

Collaborations with schools and nonprofits, offering outreach programs and youth mentorship through the arts and or music. Also an intergenerational program for Seniors to have a chance to become teachers! A way for us to embrace their knowledge and have them involved. I have a book full of ideas!

The model has worked beautifully in other communities, such as the Pendleton Art Center, which has become a vibrant hub for creativity, education, and community events. Hermiston has the heart and talent to build something similar — a welcoming, multi-purpose space that brings people together and uplifts the community. I feel deeply that we need that today!

I would be happy to help organize, volunteer, or assist in developing a sustainable plan for this project. I truly believe this historic building could become a cornerstone for community growth and creativity.

Thank you for considering this idea. I would love the opportunity to discuss it further or participate in any upcoming community meetings about the building’s future.
