Greetings from the Hercules Middle and High School library. We've been looking through our circulation data and have discovered that over 600 books have been marked as "lost" so far this year. At an average cost of over $20 per book, that's more than $12,000 worth! Most of these have been checked out by our middle school students. In fact, we have found that some kids have as many as six "lost" books.
Now, we know they aren't really lost. They are probably under the bed, or at the bottom of a backpack, or tucked into the edge of a favorite easy chair, but the bottom line is they're not back in the library where they belong. We really, really want them back!
We'll be sending out lost/overdue notices the same day as progress reports, so please check in with you student about library books. Students with two or more lost books by the end of next week will have their library privileges suspended and their report card will be held until the missing library book issue is resolved. We don't charge for overdue books, even if they are marked lost. We just want them back. We do, however, expect any library book that really is lost to be paid for.
