This week, we got to celebrate Perfect Square Day! Mathematically, a perfect square is a number that is equal to a while number when square rooted.

On 9/16/2025, students were shown how each number of the date can be square rooted to equal 3/4/45 which actually aligns with what we’re learning right now! The last year this happened was 1936, and it won’t happen again until 2116!!!

Some classes were able to use popsicle sticks to create as many combinations of squares they could. What a cool opportunity to be on Earth for the one year in a 180 year span that this occurs!

8th graders have been learning about simplifying square and cube roots the past week. Today in fifth hour, we split into groups in which the 8th graders gave 7th graders the run down on what the roots mean, how to use a calculator to solve them, and how to show their work to support their answer before we played a class game reviewing the skill. The conversations were so fun to listen to!

Last week students worked through Unit 0, which is essentially a practice unit for them to learn how the class works. The last lesson was for the students to pick a skill from a provided list, and try to master that skill by watching a YouTube video over it. Students made paper airplanes, drew dragons, did origami, and learned how to french braid!!

Today students were asked the question, “If you were to write the numbers 1-1000, how many times will you write a 7?” In...

Today students were asked the question, “If you were to write the numbers 1-1000, how many times will you write a 7?” In all our classes, only two students were able to solve it (without looking it up) and support their answer with math. In the group picture below, Miles is teaching his classmates how he was able to get the answer. Such a great example of student leadership!

3rd Hour students completing the Krypto Game

In this game, students are given 5 numbers and asked to combine them in whatever way they can to produce a 6th provided number. Students were also assigned random groups for this and many didn’t even realize when they had spent over 30 minutes on it! It’s been so fun watching this group of students put their thinking to the test at the start of this year!
