SAVE THE DATE! The Henrico School Board will hold the second of two town hall meetings, with a chance for citizens to engage in small-group activities and offer input. The meeting will take place Thursday, Feb. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Elizabeth Holladay Elementary School!
Check out what's new in Henrico schools!
The Oak is taking root in our community! The former Highland Springs High School has been reimagined as The Oak Avenue Complex, a multipurpose hub for academic programming, community engagement opportunities, and wraparound community resources and programs that support students and families. A festive grand opening for "The Oak" gave participants a look at the center's remarkable progress — and a glimpse of its bright future.
YAY HEIDI JUAN! Heidi Juan, who teaches English as a second language at Elizabeth Holladay Elementary School, is today's "Yay of the Day" honoree. Superintendent Amy Cashwell honored her recently at the school.

YAYWORTHY:
Nominator Aimee Connolly said: "She makes a difference in the lives of all of her students each and every day! She planned and implemented several Hispanic heritage activities, not only for her English-as-a-second-language students. She came into all six kindergarten classrooms and included all students to provide them with an opportunity to learn about their classmates' heritage."

Elizabeth Hartwell said: "Heidi goes above and beyond to meet the needs of all Holladay students, not just the students she serves. She plans meaningful lessons incorporating real-life, hands-on experiences. Mrs. Juan finds a way to make each student at Holladay shine, and feel special and valued. Teachers love working with her and the students do too. She makes us all better humans! Holladay serves one of the largest Hispanic student populations in the county. During Hispanic Heritage Month, Heidi honored Hispanic heritage by visiting all six kindergarten classrooms and teaching our students about the history of serapes, sombreros and the Mexican hat dance. Her lessons were very carefully planned and thought out, including children's literature, movement breaks, realia and hands-on art activities, as well as incorporating the kindergarten SOLs (ex: patterns and shapes). The students were able to make their own serapes and sombreros! It was incredible that Mrs. Juan included every kindergartner in these powerful lessons — she reached 100 children! She could have very easily taught these lessons with only the children she serves, however it was never a question that she would provide us all with her love of culture!"

Thank you for all you do, Heidi Juan, to make a positive difference and move HCPS forward!

YAY NURA SURITA! Nura Surita, an alternative education technician at An Achievable Dream Certified Academy Secondary, is today's "Yay of the Day" honoree. Superintendent Amy Cashwell honored her recently at the Oak Avenue Complex.

YAYWORTHY:
Nominator Quantina Jackson said: "She goes above and beyond to help the students and staff at An Achievable Dream Certified Academy Secondary. When our associate principal, secretary and director of operations were out, Nura stepped up and assisted in the cafeteria, in the front office, with testing, and with transportation — all without missing a beat! She truly is the epitome of doing 'whatever it takes' to ensure that things run smoothly during hectic times."

Thank you for all you do, Nura Surita, to make a positive difference and move HCPS forward!

Nominate an incredible HCPS educator for the 2023 REB Award for Teaching Excellence

Central Virginia recipients of the REB Awards for Teaching Excellence have earned graduate degrees, climbed mountains, studied the effects of climate change, traced their ancestors and met peers from around the world — all to reignite their own passion for learning and to pass it on to their students. Each of their REB journeys started with a nomination.

Nominate the special Henrico County Public Schools teacher in your life for an REB Award for Teaching Excellence. Nominations are due Feb. 21 at 5 p.m. The annual awards provide a tangible, public way to recognize outstanding HCPS instructors — and give them the means to continue growing. The awards are given by the Community Foundation, and identify, recognize and support teaching excellence in the Richmond area. Honorees receive professional development grants, given to teachers who have distinguished themselves by their inspiring classroom performance. Grants have been increased and range from $5,000 to $15,000.

Through a nomination process, approximately 15 outstanding teachers are selected each year to receive cash grants to support professional development activities. Nominations are invited from parents, students, educators and the community at large. Individuals may nominate only one teacher. Teachers may not be nominated by their principal and may not nominate themselves.

Nominations must be made online. A letter in support of the nomination must be written by another individual and submitted online with the nomination.

Who: The Community Foundation invites nominations from students, parents, colleagues, school staff and administrators (except for the school principal), and members of the community.
When: Nominations and letters of support must be submitted online by Feb. 21 at 5 p.m.
How: Go to henricoschools.us and look under "What’s Trending" for a link with full details, or visit www.cfrichmond.org/REB. For questions regarding nominations, email Tracie Weston, HCPS' director of professional learning and leadership, at [email protected].

Thank you, principals! Governor of Virginia has proclaimed Jan. 15-21 “Virginia School Principals Appreciation Week.” The week was first officially recognized in 1987 and continues as a well-deserved public acknowledgement of the great care and dedication of our school leaders. HCPS principals are second to none, and we appreciate all that you do, day in and day out!

Read the proclamation at https://www.governor.virginia.gov/newsroom/proclamations/proclamation-list/virginia-school-principals-appreciation-week.html
YAY WILEY HUNNICUTT! Wiley Hunnicutt, an English teacher at Douglas Freeman High School, is today's "Yay of the Day" honoree. Superintendent Amy Cashwell honored her recently at the school.

YAYWORTHY:
Nominator Melanie Davis said: "Ms. Hunnicutt deserves a 'Yay of the Day' because she is an awesome teacher. She is invested in helping you and is realistic with the work she assigns. She also wants to get to know you as a person and understands that you can't be perfect every time or always get something right on the first try. She is also funny, which helps some students learn better. Overall, she is just an excellent teacher, and I wish I had her as my English teacher every year. A specific example of a time this person made a positive impact is when we were sharing our poems and she told a student that he could be a professional poet and make a career out of it because his poetry was fantastic and intriguing."

Thank you for all you do, Wiley Hunnicutt, to make a positive difference and move HCPS forward!

Henrico County’s flag is green, and county buildings keep adding sustainability features to match — including HCPS schools. Highland Springs and J.R. Tucker high schools have been awarded LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for sustainable design and construction and reduced environmental impact.

Other schools achieving LEED-certification are Holman Middle School, David Kaechele and Elizabeth Holladay elementary schools and Glen Allen High School. The new Advanced Career Education centers at Hermitage and Highland Springs, currently under construction, are also expected to be LEED-certified when completed. Henrico County now has 22 LEED-certified buildings, including libraries, fire stations and health buildings.

Highland Springs and J.R. Tucker are each 265,000 square feet and share some energy-efficient design features. These include new solar panels, which are expected to supply about 50% of the schools’ electricity and save over $1 million on utility costs over 25 years.

As many indoor malls have struggled in recent years, Regency Mall has seen a rebirth with a mix of housing, recreational facilities, and new eateries and shops along its perimeter. Now the venerable shopping center has become a hub for education, too. On Wednesday, HCPS, county and Virginia leaders celebrated a new 48,000-square-foot adult education center on the mall’s lower level.

The facility repurposes former mall storefronts as classrooms, meeting rooms and information centers where students can prepare for a variety of careers. The former storefronts are grouped around a common area where students can work on projects together or socialize. Because of the mall location, students will have opportunities to eat meals or shop before and after class.

HCPS also used the project as a hands-on classroom, enabling high school students to use the skills they’ve developed in career and technical education programs. Community businesses also worked with students, donated their time and materials to the project, and sponsored some of the former storefronts.

The school division is already receiving inquiries from other localities around the country about replicating the idea in their communities.

Interested in adult education opportunities? Popular career-related HCPS adult education courses include:

Virginia Pharmacy Technician Program.
Medical Billing and Coding.
Computer Literacy.
Woodworking.
Practical Nursing Program.
Basic Furniture Reupholstery.
ServSafe Manager and Food Handler.
Virginia Principals of Real Estate.

The center also offers courses in personal enrichment, learning English and other languages, earning a GED and exploring the arts. Find out more about HCPS adult education classes at https://adulteducation.henricoschools.us/.

As Henrico County Public Schools celebrated an exciting opening week to the 2023-24 school year, the school division was recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best-In-State Employers for 2023.

Honorees were identified on a state-by-state basis, and criteria included in-state recommendations, national industry recommendations and staff recommendations, as well as working conditions, salary, diversity and more. The full list can be found at https://www.forbes.com/lists/best-employers-by-state.

Henrico County Public Schools employs more than 7,000 staff members to serve its nearly 50,000 students. Henrico County employees recently received an 8.2% staff pay raise for the 2023-24 school year — the largest divisionwide pay raise in 33 years.

HCPS boosted its minimum wage to $15 per hour, a particularly important measure for some members of the division’s hardworking support staff. HCPS is also offering bonuses for staff members entering certain roles, teachers that are part of the Opportunity Schools initiative and referrals for full-time hires.

“It's an incredible honor for HCPS to be recognized as one of the top employers in Virginia, and it's a testament to the job all our staff members do in supporting our students,” said HCPS Superintendent Dr. Amy Cashwell. “The school division would not be the same without the dedication of these individuals in classrooms, cafeterias, school buses and everything in between, and HCPS is proud to provide an environment that fosters this type of success and satisfaction.”

👉 Want to join our award-winning workforce?

With the school year fully underway, Henrico County Public Schools is still offering career opportunities in various roles. Welcome to a new era of adult education at Henrico County Public Schools. 🎓

A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held this morning for the Adult Education Center at Regency, the final result of a project that has transformed 48,000 square feet of the West End mall's lower level into an innovative career-learning space.

Community businesses also worked with students, donated their time and materials to the project and sponsored some of the former storefronts.

“An important goal was to find a way to make adult programs more accessible and attractive to people who want to advance in careers,” said Mac Beaton, HCPS director of workforce and career development. “What better way to do it than in a familiar environment like Regency, where students can go and ‘shop’ for their futures?”

As part of ongoing efforts to ensure safety in schools, Henrico County Public Schools will be using weapons scanners beginning with the start of the school year. Devices will be installed at high schools first, beginning with the first day of school on Aug. 21, followed by middle and elementary schools.

Student arrival may be a bit slower as students get used to new procedures, but in general, the scanners shouldn't impede the flow of students into school buildings. The devices are sophisticated enough to tell the difference between weapons and other items such as cell phones or keys. You can watch this short video for an update on what to expect when you arrive at school or visit https://www.henricoschools.us/o/hcps/page/safety for more information.

---

We are gearing up for the school year and need your help!!

Our school year requests from teachers and admin from Richmond Public Schools, Henrico County Public Schools, and Chesterfield County Public Schools account for about 75% of the birthdays we celebrate every year (more than 2,500)! This requires a huge investment for supplies - each birthday bag has plates, napkins, a birthday chair cover, a birthday banner, confetti, balloons, candles, a party hat, a noisemaker, and a handwritten birthday card.

We are thankful for our wholesale partners who make this possible and allow us to purchase thousands (and thousands) of dollars worth of supplies at a fraction of the cost.

Can you help us make this investment happen? By donating just $20, we are able to purchase SO MUCH MORE.

$20 gets us:
🎊 40 birthday banners, or
🎈 120 balloons, or
🕯️ 216 individual candles.

We stretch every dollar as far as possible! You can donate by visiting https://www.celebraterva.org/?form=FUNGBAVRFYP

Thank you for making magic come alive for kiddos right here in RVA 💕

Don't want to play but still want to contribute to the fun weekend? We're still looking for volunteers. Go to www.tinyurl.com/HoopItUpVolunteers to sign up.

Video games during middle school?! It was as awesome as it sounds.

Three HCPS middle schools already got to experience the value of esports clubs, and many more could be joining them this upcoming school year.

Aug. 21 is right around the corner! Is your student caught up on immunizations? 💉

If they are, great! If not, there are still plenty of opportunities to get it done. You can either contact your child's primary care provider or go to one of the 10 free immunization clinics the Richmond & Henrico Health Districts have scheduled through Aug. 17. Dates, locations and sign-up information can be found at https://henrico.us/health/immunizations/childhood-immunizations/.

You can learn more about which vaccinations are needed at https://www.henricoschools.us/page/health. This is especially important for students entering kindergarten, seventh grade or 12th grade.

Put your hard hats on: It's time for a tour of the renovations in progress at the Advanced Career Education Center at Highland Springs!

Construction teams are hard at work expanding and modernizing the building to enhance the career-learning programs offered by the ACE Center at Highland Springs. The main building will be available when students arrive for the first day of the school year on Aug. 21, while the Trades Center is scheduled to open in December.

We can't wait to see the final result!
