🖥📚LITERACY WEBINAR FOR PARENTS

Reading is the cornerstone of academic success. Unfortunately, the number of students in Virginia who can't read proficiently by 4th grade has increased as a result of the Pandemic. Join Virginia PTA, Virginia Association of Elementary School Principals, and Decoding Dyslexia Virginia for a webinar on January 9th with Dr. Emily Solari and Delegate Carrie Coyner to learn about the multi-pronged approach Virginia is using to improve reading proficiency.

In this webinar parents will learn what evidence-based literacy instruction is (and is not), what they can look for in the classroom, and practical reading strategies they can use at home to support their struggling reader. We'll also discuss implementation of the 2021 Virginia Literacy Act, how it's changing the way reading is being taught across Virginia, and how you can advocate for improved reading resources during the 2023 General Assembly Session.

The DES school counseling team is elated to be back for a spectacular school year. They are implementing a wonderful after school program called “Girls on the Run”. This program is a great way to help build young girls’ self-esteem, make meaningful connections, and promote physical activity all in one. This program accepts 8-20 girls and run for 10 weeks with a commitment of meeting after school twice a week for 1.5 hours. At the end of the season there is a celebratory, non-competitive 5K in December at Bryant Park. They are looking for a head coach, assistant coaches, and substitute coaches for the team here at Dumbarton. You do not have to be athletic to coach. One of the coaches must be CPR/First Aid certified. If someone is interested in coaching and is not CPR/First Aid certified you can reach out to GOTR staff at [email protected] and they will help point you in the right direction regarding that process. Coach training will be held on Saturday, September 10 from 10:00a.m. – 3:30p.m. In addition to that training, there will be online modules to complete as well. Anyone interested in volunteering, should email Brianna Hodge at [email protected].

PTA will have 3 different prizes for raffle at $1 per entry (enter as many times as you like - proceeds help to support fun events at school-sponsored by the PTA). You do not have to be at the event all evening in order to win, we will need to get name and phone number to reach the winner.
The baskets up for raffle include:
1) Stampin' Up arts and crafts basket (retail value over $200!)
2) British Swim School - 3 free swim classes along with towel and goggles
3) Kindle Fire cozy basket complete with blanket and candy!

Unfortunately, the Triangle Rock Club Climbing Event (would have been Sunday, November 10th from 6-8) had to be canceled due to lack of interest/sign-up. 😟
We will chat more as a PTA Board along with school officials to see if we can reschedule this event after the New Year.

Friendly PTA reminder of upcoming PTA events:
1. Friday - October 25th - 5:30pm-6pm = Hallways of Treats at school, come dressed up with your trick or treat bag and walk certain halls of school for some treats. Then stay for the PTA Movie Night at 6:15pm, Book of Life will be shown. Members - show your card or ID and your family gets in FREE. Join that night ($5 to join PTA) and the family gets in FREE. Otherwise, pay $5 each person (with 3 and under free). Popcorn, chips, soda and water for $1 each, Smencils (pencil with yummy scents) for $1 and DES decals for $5 during the movie.
2. Thursday - November 7th - 5:30-7:30pm = Mathnasium Game Night - FREE for all! There will be games set up to play math for all ages (Pre-K through 5th grade) in the school cafeteria. Pizza will be $1 a slice and water will be provided. Come out for fun with your whole family!
3. Sunday - November 10th - 6-8pm = Triangle Rock Club Rock Climbing Event This event will be located at Triangle Rock Club (4700 Thalbro St Richmond, VA 23230). Cost is $15 per climber/participant and anyone is welcome to come and watch (they have plenty of space to watch!) We need at least 20 climbers (only 2 people signed up) or we have to cancel the event! Please sign up if you plan to attend at: https://trianglerock.club/Dumbarton You can also sign the waiver while on the site to sign up. Triangle Rock Club will be giving the class with the most people to sign up for the event prizes as well!
Don't forget, we are also holding our PTA Membership drive until October 31st! The class with the MOST PTA members will get a free pizza party, sponsored by the PTA. Also, 1 lucky child in the school who has a PTA member will win Jumpology passes!! Winners will be announced on Friday, November 1st.

PTA Advocacy: Henrico students and schools need your attention Your PTA may raise funds for your school, but it is first and foremost an advocacy organization. Henrico County Council of PTAs helps our schools work together to influence decisions that occur beyond a school's walls. 

Huge shout out to Tyler Jones (rising Eagle Scout) and his buddies for completing the "Paint The Blacktop" service project for our school! Thanks to his efforts, we have a wonderful map of the United States and a way for children to expand their learning (just in time for school to start on Tuesday)!

Wow! Hard to believe the school year has come to a close already! Thank you to Dr. Champ, the Staff, Teachers,for making this an awesome school year. Also, thank you to all who were members and engaged with the PTA this year to support our Wildcats. Congrats to all the 5th graders who are moving on! Join the on Friday, December 9th, from 7-9pm for Dumbarton Gives Back! A community event to share in the joy of giving! This is a FREE event for the whole family!

This is also open to our whole community, not just the school. We will have some musical and theatrical performances, a magician, HPD, HFD as well as Santa, and more. The Marines will also be there receiving the toys collected through Dumbarton's Toys for Tots effort.

Bring one or more canned goods or nonperishable food items to benefit the Central Virginia Food Bank, and receive a raffle ticket for a $50 gift card from Kroger!
