Not many people are aware of the dangers of flying with young kids, without a car seat.

Many believe that just because lap babies are allowed for under 2 years old that it's safe or it's fine. Or you get the "Well if the plane were to go down anyways a car seat is not going to save them."

The car seat is not there to protect for (rare) cases of the plane crashing out of the sky. Car seats help protect against turbulence, which is experienced on just about every flight, as well as run way accidents. Run way accidents are actually pretty common & turbulence can be VERY strong and I can assure you that you will not be able to securely hold your child in severe turbulence.

Although the FAA allows babies under 2 to sit in your lap, if you look at their actual stance on the matter they actually recommend the use of car seats for all kids until they can properly fit the airplane seat belt (about 40lbs)

If you think of it it like this: the coffee pots are required to be secured down, so should your little ones. While I understand that does add a significant additional cost, protecting your child from potentially suffering a severe injury makes the cost worth it.

This also helps eliminate the unknowns that happen to your car seat while baggage handlers are in charge of loading it into the plane. I can assure you they do not care about potential breakage and it's highly unlikely the airline will replace it.

The Henrico County Police Division, with assistance from the New Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia DMV and VCU Health, will host a Child Safety Seat Check-Up event on March 23, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Varina Area Library (1875 New Market Road, Henrico VA).

This FREE event is an opportunity for Richmond metro-area residents to make sure their child’s car seat/booster seat is installed properly. Registration for this event is strongly encouraged for planning purposes and can be done here: https://forms.office.com/g/5bxC7BrJuY?origin=lprLink.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), while most parents and caregivers are confident that they have correctly installed their child’s car seat, almost half (46%) have been installed incorrectly. A properly used/installed car seat can reduce the risk of death for your child by 71%.

Expecting a new little one? Wondering when the right time to install your seat is? Let me tell ya....

The best time to install is as close to when you're going to deliver as possible! Say you've installed your seat but you still have more than a month left in your pregnancy. You're casually driving down the road and bam you're involved in a crash! What now? Many seats require replacement after ANY accidents. Some require replacement only if the crash meets certain criteria. But the bottom line is that you're now very likely going to have to replace that brand new seat that's never even been used.

The best thing to do is to wait as long as possible. I'd recommend no more than 2 weeks prior to your due date. If you have extenuating circumstances that you're thinking you'll deliver early or anything like that, I would still recommend to wait as long as you can. The last thing you'd need on your plate as a parent anticipating the arrival of your baby is replacing something so important as the car seat! If worse comes to worse, and things are rushed and you wind up at the hospital without the seat installed, just know that there will be time to install while there 😉 Maybe not by mom, but your spouse or a trusted family member can hopefully run to your home, grab the seat and bring it back to install in the parking lot! I promise there's time 😊
