The Mountain Community School We are a free public charter school in Henderson County, NC offering a unique K-8 education. D. Hirsch, Jr.

Small class sizes (18-20 students) allows more teacher/student contact time, and allows for a more individualized approach to each child's education. High expectations of students challenge and motivate them to excel academically within their own individual frameworks, and allows each student to make the most of their public school experience. Extensive parental involvement is central to the struc

ture and success of The Mountain Community School. We have chosen curricula rich in content and strong in skills development, yet flexible enough to challenge children at all levels of ability. The foundation of the curriculum is the Core Knowledge Sequence (CKS), developed in conjunction with Dr. E. Core Knowledge provides a detailed outline of specific content to be taught in language arts, history and geography, math, science, and the fine arts. This curriculum has been shown to help students build a strong foundation of knowledge and a high level of cultural literacy in a coherent plan that builds year by year. Whether a child is considered "at risk" or "academically gifted", CKS offers an appropriately broad base of challenging knowledge to prepare them for successful higher learning. Any student eligible to attend public schools in Henderson County, NC, and who meets the age and grade requirements, is eligible to attend, subject to space availability. The Mountain Community School shall not discriminate against any student on the basis of ethnicity, national origin, age, gender, religion, or disability.

On Wednesday, the 26th, the 5th/6th Grade Wilderness Trekking Club went on a hike to Little Bradley Falls. The hike involved two water crossings, a rock scramble, and some catching of fish with their hands or sandwich bags. Smiles and memories were made.

On Wednesday, the 8th-grade class went on an after-school field trip. They traveled to Cherokee, NC, to watch the outdoor play, Unto These Hills, which is about the history of the Cherokee Nation. The students had a good time and represented themselves and the school positively. It was a late return at 11:45 pm to the school. They were accompanied by Mr. O, Ms. Jessica, one 8th-grade parent, and Mr. Morris and his wife.

The joy of belonging is a wonderful thing, and where we start our year here at TMCS. Each of our new 1st-8th grade students were sorted into either House Lovern, House Palmer, House Smathers or House Chet today. As the confetti cannon popped, each student received welcome and colored swag from their new house. Mr. Morris and Mr. Hallmark got sorted as well!
