At Bullington Gardens, now is the time to see the bustin’ hearts of the American strawberry bush (Euonymus americanus), aka hearts-a-bustin’! This attractive perennial shrub tolerates a wide range of soil and moisture conditions. The spring flowers resemble strawberries. In late summer the seed capsules “bust” open to expose five large seeds covered by bright red arils. Its leaves turn red in fall. The flowers attract pollinators and although poisonous to humans, the leaves are grazed by deer and the arils are eaten by birds and small mammals.

The fairies are packing their tiny bags and getting ready to migrate with the monarchs! The Fairy Trail and Book Nook at Bullington Gardens close for the season on Saturday, August 29. Come say goodbye one last time—wander the woodland path, visit the little villages, and enjoy a final story in the nook before the magic rests until next summer.

As you walk from the parking lot into Bullington Gardens, look for a small tree on your right with buds that are just starting to open into white flowers, the Seven Son Flower (Heptacodium miconioides). Rare in its native China, it was cultivated from seeds at the Arnold Arboretum in 1980 and is now in gardens throughout the world. The common name is a translation of the Chinese description of six flowers around a central bud, the “seventh son”. If you scan the QR code on the sign, it will take you to the North Carolina Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox where you can learn more about this highly prized tree.
