Last week, I took and passed my certification exam through IAYT, and I've been reflecting on just how grateful I am for my teachers.

Thank you for sharing so openly. Thank you for your mentorship. Thank you for pointing your students back to their own inner compasses.

We have been deep in decluttering mode in my house, preparing to do some room shuffling and before we can do that, the clutter has got to go ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ

Yesterday, when I was dropping off some donations that resulted from all that decluttering, I was reflecting on how that decluttering was really a yoga practice even though it wouldn't look that way on the outside.

Clearing out clutter. Enjoying a good meal. Pausing before writing that email. Going for a walk without headphones.

These are all small ways of letting our yoga practice come off of the mat.

If you're ready for some support in your wellness journey, DM to set up a 30 minute friendly chat ๐Ÿ’—

Over this past week, I've been joining the Asheville Master's swim team for their practices. For anyone unfamiliar, the Master's is basically grown-up swim team. And for a long time, I was too intimidated to join. In my imagination, everyone was a former collegiate swimmer; meanwhile, I haven't swam butterfly in 20 years and went to a college too tiny to have a swim team (btwโ€“they have a swim team now).

After emailing back and forth with the coach, I decided to get over myself and just go try a practice, and it's been so much fun to connect with new people and push myself in a way that I just don't tend to do when I'm swimming independently.

Which has me reflecting on effort and ease. Yoga asanas (poses) are supposed to be a combination of effort and ease. Enough effort to hold our attention combined with enough ease to avoid over doing it.

And, if yoga practice is more than just what we do on the mat, and I wholeheartedly believe it is, then this balance be between effort and ease will start to come in to the way we do other activities, relationships, and overall lifestyle.

But, I digress.

August recommendations are up on my Substack. The link is in my stories or comment August, and I'll send it right over ๐Ÿ’—

Sometimes, I get to have my ideal morning.

Sipping on my coffee while I read. A quiet yoga practice. A warm, nourishing breakfast before getting the kids up for school.

But, this morning wasn't one of those days.

It was bike to school day, which meant we needed to be ready to ride earlier than we usually get out the door for school.

And, there was a time when that change of routine would have had me in a tailspin.

But, the beautiful thing about yoga therapy is that it's highly personalized and flexible, so for me that means from time to time my practice is in the evening instead of the morning, and sometimes it is five minutes of breath work while I'm in the car rider line.

Ready to learn about how yoga therapy could support you?

My first pixie cut wasn't by choice.

Rather, it was the result of a brain surgery to remove a tumor that had kept me sick for months. I woke up that morning with half of my head shaved, afraid, and lacking the skills to advocate for myself.

Throughout the years, I grow my hair out only to cut it again, and it's not because I can't decide what I want (although I am a Libra sun, so that's part of it ๐Ÿ’…). It's also because every time I willingly choose to cut my hair short, I feel like I'm giving that little thirteen year old self a hug.

In truth, every challenge, every opportunity to let go, to shed, is an opportunity for growth and freedom.

I invite you to read my new piece on Substack.

I don't knowโ€“it's kinda chic ๐Ÿ’…

Kinda chic to grow in your own way ๐Ÿ’…

Kinda chic to be here for the messy middle ๐Ÿ’…

Yoga is listening: Begin Again Edition

This morning I was swimming laps at the Y and while I was stopped at the wall, I turned to my left and a fellow regular was getting in the lane. I told him good morning and asked how he was doing.

"I'm good," he said, "I haven't been in a few weeks. I feel like I'm always starting over."

I smiled and told him I could relate to that feeling, and as I went back to my swim, it hit me that this is one of the gifts of yoga.

It builds our capacity to dig deep and begin anew with a willingness to detach from the outcome.

It builds our capacity to find resilience.

It builds our capacity to realize that we can begin again at anytime ๐Ÿ”ฅ

The gifts of yoga go far beyond the mat.

Last night was just one of those nights where nothing felt right, and I found myself on the verge of losing it ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ

The kids were tired and bickering ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ

On our evening walk, the dog wanted to chase every squirrel he saw ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ

My skin felt grimy and hot from walking in the summer heat ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ

As soon as I got in from taking my evening walk with the dog, I closed my door, rolled out my mat, and did this breath practice along with some movement and some long wxhale breathing combined with legs up the wall.

My whole system shifted, and I came back to myself โœŒ๏ธ

Yoga is listening: Gwyneth Paltrow Edition

In case you missed it, Gwyneth Paltrow dropped an ad marketing luxury condos in Israel during an ongoing genocide, and I had to talk about it.

Because wellness culture divorced of ethics is just naval gazing, and I'm not here for it.

I'm here for yoga that is relational. I'm here for yoga that tells the truth. I'm here for yoga that embodies integrity.

If that's what you're here for too, let's be friends โœŒ๏ธ

Walt Whitman wrote: "Do I contradict myself? Ver well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I comtain multitudes.)"

And yoga philosophy agrees.

The layers of self are called the koshas, and they offer a map for understanding ourselves: physically, energeticly, mentally, intuitively, and spiritually.

And when I say โ€œyoga is listening,โ€ this is part of what I mean.

So often, we only pay attention when the physical body starts shouting. But sometimes what weโ€™re experiencing isnโ€™t only physical. Sometimes exhaustion is emotional. Sometimes tension is nervous system overload. Sometimes what weโ€™re craving is deeper connection or meaning.

The koshas invite us to ourselves deeply by asking:

What layer of me needs support right now?

That question alone can change the way we care for ourselves and help us learn to embrace the fullness of who we really are ๐ŸŒฟ
