Fun Facts - On June 28, 1870, President Grant formally declared Christmas a United States federal holiday. In 1958 it became a public holiday. In 1962, the first Christmas postage stamp was released. Alabama was the 1st state to recognize Christmas.

Thursday Dec 18th is Shine bright day - wear SPARKLY clothes.
Fun Fact - the Rockefeller tree is decorated with 50,000 LED lights and topped with a 900-pound Swarovski crystle star. The star features more than 3 million crystals covering 70 spikes. Thats a lot of SPARKLE! ✨

Dec 17th is Christmas Character Day - dress as a snowman, a reindeer, an elf, etc.
Fun Fact - In the 19th century, the holidays grew into celebrations and the Snowman began appearing in yards. In the 20th century, songs about Frosty the Snowman and cartoons, made Frosty a staple at Christmas time.
Female Reindeers dont loose their antlers in the winter like males do, so technically, Santas sleigh is pulled by an all female crew!
In the poem, “The Night Before Christmas”, Santa Claus is referred to as a “jolly old elf”, helping create the foundation for elves to be Santa‘s helper.

Tuesday Dec 16th is Grinch day. Wear your grinch shirts or green.
Fun fact - the Grinch story book came out in 1957, and the Grinch was not green! He was black and white with red eyes. In 1966, the TV cartoon made him the green that we see today. The cost to make the cartoon was $300,000 and used the voice of Boris Karloff, the 1930s Frankenstein for the Grinch.

Monday Dec 15th is wear a Holiday Hat day!
Fun fact: The Santa hat, called a Pileus hat, was popular in ancient Greece, 5th century BC. In 1863, the first Santa Hat image was drawn, and became the image that influenced many modern depictions of Santa. Coca-Cola popularized the red Santa Hat that we know today.

Did you know - Flannel originated in the 17th century in Wales. It has great moisture-wicking properties keeping you wam in cold temperatures. Flannel will stay dry due to its incredible hydrophilic inner layer and hydrophobic outer layer.

Dec 11th is the 80th day of school - Dress in your best 80’s attire!
The 80’s rolled in with louder music and expressive fashion. Clothing matched the high energy, and vivid colors. Leotards and leg warms found their way into the fashion trend as well. Neon colors carried a sense of fun that aligned with the lively pace of the decade.

Wed Dec 10th is MistleTOES day (aka Crazy Sock Day)
Did you know? - Crazy Sock Day is an awareness holiday for Down Syndrome. Crazy Sock Day is usually March 21st. Here is why. Down Syndrome Day occurs in the third month of the year (to represent three copies of the chromosome) and on the 21st day (which means, of course, the chromosome affected). The affected chromosome looks very similar to a striped sock, hence the day!

Dec 9th is Ugly Sweater Day!!
Did you know? - Originally called the “Jingle Bells Sweater” the Ugly Sweater first showed up in 1950. Fast forward to 1980, with Bill Cosby and his iconic crazy sweaters. Later in 1989 Chevy Chase wore his Ugly Sweater in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. Some other famouse Ugly Sweater movies - Santa Clause" series, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas," "Surviving Christmas," and "Fred Claus.". Today - the Ugly Sweater has become a sport of sorts - Who has the Ugliest one!

Dec 8th is wear Red and Green Day at Dooley.
Ever wondered why the colors red and green are associated with Christmas?
The Celtic people believed holly plants brought beauty and good fortune in the middle of winter, and would decorate their homes with the red and green plants. Over time, that tradition of putting up red and green holly transformed into hanging red and green decorations around the world.
