September 11, 2001.
Some can remember where they were.
Some can remember what they saw.
And some remember because service called them closer to the unimaginable.
Today, we honor the men and women who ran toward danger, those who served in the days, months and years that followed, and those who paid a price that cannot be measured.
My husband is a retired firefighter, and more than two decades later, he can still vividly remember that day. For so many first responders, 9/11 isn't simply a moment in history. It is a memory they will forever carry.
We remember the lives lost.
We remember the families forever changed.
We remember the courage, sacrifice and service.
And we remember those who survived that day but carried its physical and emotional weight for years afterward.
May we never become so far removed from September 11th that we forget what was given and what was lost.
