🔬 Looking for a Nature of Science activity that goes beyond the Scientific Method?

If you're teaching students how science really works—not just memorizing the steps of the scientific method—this activity was designed for you.

Students explore ideas like:
✅ Observation vs. inference
✅ Qualitative vs. quantitative data
✅ Inductive vs. deductive reasoning
✅ Collaboration and peer review
✅ Why scientific knowledge changes over time

The station activity gets students reading, discussing, and thinking critically without overwhelming them with text.

✨ The first week of school doesn’t have to be all icebreakers... and it doesn’t have to be all rules either.

I like to spend 10–15 minutes each day helping students get to know one another while still teaching routines, expectations, and content.

These are a few of my favorite low-prep activities that get students moving, talking, and laughing—without taking over the entire class period.

🧪 The first week of chemistry sets the tone for the entire year.

One of the biggest changes I’ve made over the years is slowing down.

Instead of spending one class period reading through my syllabus, I now spend the first week (sometimes even the first two weeks!) helping students learn how our classroom works.

We talk about routines, grading, labs, notebooks, missing work, and what successful chemistry students actually do. Students complete their own Chemistry Survival Guide as we go, creating a reference they’ll use all year long.

Every June, I sit down with my planner and ask myself the same questions:
✔ What do my students absolutely need to know?
✔ Which labs are worth the class time?
✔ What can I cut if I fall behind?

After almost 20 years of teaching Chemistry, I’ve learned that planning isn’t about fitting everything into Quarter 1—it’s about making thoughtful decisions before the school year begins.

That’s exactly what we’ll do together in the Quarter 1 Planning Workshop.

Have you figured out which labs you’re doing during Quarter 1?

If not, join me tonight as we brainstorm labs, create a supply list, and start building a plan before school starts.

The goal isn’t to have every lab planned.

The goal is to know what labs you’re doing and what supplies you’ll need before August hits.
